My Bonneville GXP has 160K miles on it. The Northstar motor has had a timing chain or timing chain tensioner failure. It will not run. I have decided not to fix...The car is in great shape otherwise. Does anybody know how to find another GXP enthusiast who would want to purchase the car as is for parts or to rebuild? Thanks in advance.....

Uh oh, The N* is an interference engine. That ain't good... It most likely would need a new or rebuild motor.

I think a lot depends on price. A N*, even a salvage yard motor is probably going to be one of the more expensive ones vs. say an SBC.

Unfortunately you are too far away from me to make it worth it.

You can always try parting it out, many here or on the Facebook group will lust after the interior and exterior parts.

EXCELLENT IDEA!! - TO PART, THAT IS.YOU COULD GET OVER 2000 IF YOU GOT SPACE TO KEEP PARTS TILL IT SELLS.

Ok if I sell for parts how to network so the parts are known by those who matter. I don't have a lot of time right now to disassemble either. I would welcome your ideas...It grates me to have to give up this car. Just too much risk involved in the rebuild. Cash is short!!

I'm bummed to hear of a timing chain failure. My GXP has 155K on it.
I always thought head gaskets would kill my Northstar.
Now I have something else to worry about.

Any ideas as to what caused the timing chain failure?
Have you owned the car very long?
Did it burn oil regularly, or did it run low of oil often?

DOHC engines are starting to scare me. GM is having
lots of timing chain issues on the 3.6L and the 2.4L.
Not a good sign.

To be honest, as terrible as this is, I really don't think this is a common problem. In fact, I think it's the first time I've heard of it on here (not to say that I may not have missed another).

Anyway, my point is, people get so wrapped up when they hear of any engine problem in the same breath as Northstar. The reality is, lots of other engines have head gasket failures, timing chain/belt problems, oil leaks and whatever other Northstar 'Beef 'o The Day that's being bantered around . I'm not going to lose a moment of sleep worrying about my GXP based on this incident. I empathize with the OP because I'd be pretty devastated if anything ever happened to mine. I'm also not going to let my mind run wild.

It isn't. Very uncommon. There are many high mileage N*'s out there still running.

you could easily take some pics and then post ads in the forum, kijjij, craigslist and other sites/forums. one set of pics and all text adds point to it

easy and wont take much time.

FYI, when I purchased my GXP, it had a blown motor from a timing chain tensioner failure at 144k

I believe that my failure was due to a tensioner failure also. The chains are suppose to be bullet proof. Did you just replace the motor or rebuild?

So when you're down and out about a N* problem, read this and be thankful you have an awesome GM designed engine and don't have brilliant German engineering. Seriously, they can screw up the process of making toast!
