I can't get any responses to my problem on any of the Olds Aurora forums so I came here for help. I replaced my fuel level sending unit about a year ago. I been having a problem when I fuel up with random miss fires stalling. About two weeks ago I fueled up and the pump kicked off and I noticed I had a puddle of gas under the car. the paragraph below is what I posted on a Aurora forum. Is it possible to switch the fuel lines or is my new vapor canister vent solenoid bad.

Bob

I replaced my Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid about two months ago and was getting fuel coming out of it when I fueled up. If I let the gas pump fill until it clicked off I would have a puddle under the car. And it would run lousy, sometimes stalling out. So, I starting only putting $20 worth of gas in, it never stalled out but it didn't run quite right for a few minutes. Yesterday, I left work and it started to run rough and the CEL was flashing pulled over and there was gas coming out of the Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid. And NO I didn't put any gas in. I didn't make it home, ran out of gas. My wife brought me some gas and it ran for about 10 minutes more and I was out. Still didn't make it home, we towed it home yesterday evening.

About six or eight months ago I changed the fuel level sensor on the pump. Could I have gotten two of the hose fittings on the wrong fitting on the pump? I was reading on the GM Chevrolet Trailblazer forum about a Trailblazer with the same symptoms and they suggested that he may have switch the connectors around when he changed the fuel level sensor (Trailblazers have the same problem with the fuel level sensor)

Any suggestions?

Bob

If there is a puddle that means something isn't working with the EVAP system and I would wager has nothing to do with connectors on the fuel pump. Usually they're made to only fit on one thing to be idiot proof, and your vehicle wouldn't start (or would be VERY hard to start), if the pump isn't working.

When the PCM commands the EVAP purge solenoid open, it commands the vent closed. When the vent is commanded open, the purge is closed. So if it's running like poop, my guess is that there is a vacuum decay issue caused by one of these not working in conjunction with the other and/or the cannister itself and...

To make a long story short, there should be NO fuel in the EVAP system. The EVAP system is purely for fuel vapors to be returned back to the tank and not enter the atomosphere. If there is actual liquid puddling up underneath, that leads me to be believe the fuel/vapor separator isn't functioning properly, and is either blocked or allowing actual fuel into the EVAP system which then overwhelms the cannister, and then makes it's way to whereever it can leak, hence the puddle.

So it's possible that the new Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid is faulty and causing the problem?

I'm just speculating for conversation sake:

If you replaced the old Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid because it was dumping
gasoline and forming a puddle, and the new one does the exact same thing, my
first guess would be that the problem (cause) of the issue is not the Vapor Canister
Vent Solenoid. That just using deduction, the new part COULD also be bad, but
seems unlikely. More diagnosis is needed here in finding the cause of the leak.

Are you saying that the fuel lines are leaking? Have you found the actual cause?

I haven't crawled under it yet. The first time I noticed the puddle of gas was when fueling up. I came home ran it up on ramps and added enough gas until it ran out the Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid. I'm assuming that is where it is currently coming from. The fuel linesarenotbroken that I know of. I may get a chance to look at it today.

When I replace the original one I would occasionally get a gas odor after filling. I originally changed it because I kept getting the tighten gas cap message. That went away when the solenoid was changed. I was not getting gas under the car at that time.

Had a chance to crawl under my Aurora tonight. What I found was the fuel line was disconnected from the back of the fuel filter. Don't know how that could have come disconnected, it's been about a year since I changed the filter. I had to take a screw driver and pry the plastic locking clip apart to get it to lock the line on.

Will be replacing it tonight. That may have been the line that I had to disconnect when I replaced the solenoid in February.

That should have been a lot more than a puddle, that should have sprayed gas everywhere the second you turned the key on...

00Beast,

I had a puddle under the car when I was putting fuel in, that was before the episode. When the disconnected fuel line episode happened it dumped about 10 gallons in 16 miles. The engine was running rough and no power, plus I know something big was wrong when I could see the needle on the fuel gauge moving. I shut it down after I stopped and looked under the car. There was a trail of gas down the highway.

It ran fine this morning. It just has me wondering how it happened.
