Year and Trim: 2004 Bonneville GXP
I went to start my gxp this morning and found that it would not idle. It would not stay running for more than a second. I could use the gas to keep it running. After about 10 tries to keep it running, it would idle. i took it down the street and it ran fine. The idle then would try to go to around 1500-2000 rpm. then a few yards later it wouldn't idle. it shut itself off and gave me the check gas cap message. i removed cap and re tightened. It then started right up and i started to head back home. when i got in my driveway, the idle was back at 1500-2000. i revved it up a few times which did not change the idle. I started it up and checked for any major vacuum leaks in the engine bay. i then turned it off and removed and re seated the tps. I then started it up, and everything ran fine. i drove around the block and all was good. However, the check gas cap message remained on, and i suspect that it has something to do with evap control. Maybe something to do with cold start operation. If any Northstar gurus would give their input, i would appreciate it. The car is still hot, and i am waiting to try again after it is cool. Unfortunately, I do not have access to a scanner right now to check for codes.

Just went out to check, everything seemed ok, except for the check gas cap warning. made sure the cap was working correctly. Im going to check the purge solenoid next.

The gas cap warning is in fact a check for a leak in the EVAP system. You should be getting either P0455 or P0442 It could be a legitimate leak (broken hose, bad fitting, etc), or either the purge solenoid or vent solenoid aren't functioning.

If you find you have P0455, This is a result of the PCM running a large leak test, it will command the vent solenoid on (closed), and the purge solenoid on (open). Remember the two solenoids always work in the opposite of one another. It does this while the engine is running to use the engine vacuum. By doing this, it monitors the fuel tank pressure sensor (voltage), to see if it can achieve a set level of vacuum. Then it will generally command the purge solenoid off (closed) to seal the system and monitor how much of a vacuum decay rate takes place. If either it can't achieve that set level of vacuum or the decay rate is more than a calibrated/expected amount, probably over a couple of tests, then you get P0455.

If the large leak test passes, it will then run a small leak test. It does this by watching the fuel tank pressure sensor and the decay rate. If it is more than that expected amount, it'll probably try to run it again. If it fails the next time, P0442 sets.

Either code will require the use of a scan tool that you can manually command the purge solenoid and vent solenoids on/off, monitor decay rates and tank pressue, and may require injection of smoke into the system to look for those leaks.

As to why it's not idling properly, stalling, surging, etc, have you checked the following as in addition to the EVAP, they can be causing that problem too;

- PCV
- TPS
- no KR
- EGR system is operating properly
- IAC is operating properly
- damaged filter/intake clogging/collapsed intake plumbing

Then I would look into doing an injector balance test if all else fails. But you will need a Tech 2 for that.

I didn't have your issues, but I did have the issue with the gas cap. I bought a new gas cap that required a key lock...the code cleared itself after I installed it and ran it a few times.

The gas cap (rubber o-ring), is part of the EVAP system, so it will be in his checks.
