so now it works in drive unless the car is stopped. With the car in drive, the parking brake on, and the hood open, is the AC compressor clutch cycling?

NO, you dont need to open the hood . you can hear the clutch drop out, THE A/C OFF light comes on on the hvac control panel. After the car is moving the a/c off light will go out and cold air will come out of the vents. I would think that the system is charged correctly since it does work when in netural with the reved to about 1500-2000 rpm. In a earlier post someone suggested checking the TPS this checks out fine.

Any one have any ideas ????????????

When driving, shift into neutral and let the engine idle, does the A/C shut off?

Maybe check the wire harness connector to the A/C refrigerant pressure switch under the hood for damaged wires or a bad connector and the pressure switch may be going bad so try replacing it.

Wow, what an unusual HVAC problem. :helpsmilie:
Thought that the PCM reset should have worked too.

Personally think it's an electrical/electronic fault. Have you checked the push buttons and or controls associated with HVAC system? Potentially a poor wiring connection showing itself only under certain conditions i.e. connections shift under forward and reverse motion.

Basically grasping at straws hear... :dontknow:

Well I finally went and it the bullet and took the car to an independent shop. First was a bad front left trans mount. While looking at the scan tool a A/C low pressure fault was found . All the problems were from a broken wire at the pressure switch. This was caused from the broken mount letting the wire harness being pulled to tight and breaking the ground wire (?) . repairing the wire fixed the problem. Thanks to all that contributed. Brett
