Noticed lately I have a bit of a clunk on the front passenger side when I hit rough pavement. Havent pulled the wheel yet but I did look and see where it looks like something (tire) has been hitting the bottom of the strut spring. It only has 30k miles, could this be the upper strut mount? Strut still seems to be doing its job but I am thinking about replacing both front struts.

Also, thinking about going with a complete assembly. Was hoping to find some Bilsteins but they dont seem to make them for the GXP. KYB only has a replacement strut and I dont want Monroes, so its either Delco or Moog. I trust Moog front end parts but have never seen their struts before, anyone running these? or make any other recommendations?

IF you want to maintain stock ride and handling, you have to go with the OEM AC Delco parts. Nothing else is even remotely the same valving.

I'd look and see if you have a broken stabilizer link (sway bar endlink). They're a pretty common failure.

Seconded on the sway bar endlink. Check that, and go from there - but you might as well replace them also if you do struts. Assuming that's the problem, for the GXP, you NEED the AC Delco FE5 if you are looking to maintain performance. Be SURE to include new strut mounts and bearings when you replace struts. I did bearings only and blew out the stock mounts within 10 miles. My guess - at ~115,000 miles the stock rubber was already too weak to withstand the new stiff FE5 strut. Otherwise, I have NEVER seen or heard of a strut mount fail on any H-body before (which was why I never did the mounts to begin with!).

As per RockAuto:
Quote:
ACDELCO Part # 505544 {#19180217, 89047690}
STRUT KIT,FRT SUSP w/PERF & HANDLING SUSP(FE5)
$114.79 each

GM Parts Direct may cut you a better deal, depending on shipping. 19180217 is the part number you want there.

Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be a Bilstein option for us. That was for the Grand Prix GXP - whose strut wont' work directly with our cars, but William aka WhiteArrow3800 is in the process of modifying the Bilstein to work on a Bonneville. It's not that easy!

thanks for the pics. I am going to get it up in the air tomorrow and change the coolant and oil and check out the front end while I got it up there. Hopefully its the endlinks, if the GM struts failed before 30k not sure I want to put them back. KYB seems to make a replacement also. Will post back and let y'all know what I find.

thanks :beerchug:
