Hey guys, just wondering if you could help me out with a code...

Today driving to work, my SES light came on for the first time so I stopped at Napa Auto and got the car scanned. The scanner read, " P0422 Evap Emission Control System Leak (Small)," and I was hoping someone here could help describe what this code means or relates to and how concerned I should be. Also, if anything should be replaced aka sensors.

The car itself seems to be running fine as I haven't really changed anything besides using a different type of gas than normal. I was out of town this past weekend so I stopped at a "Freedom" station (and yes, the gas cap is on tight). I also reset the codes to see if it would come back on, and so far, the SES light has stayed off...

Let me know what you think, thanks again for the help!

Chances are there is a little rust around the filler neck where the gas cap seals or the gas cap itself is leaking. My light would stay off for a week or a month it varied. I replaced my gas cap with an AC Delco one I ordered from napa, approximately $17. The code hasn't reappeared since I replaced my gas cap.

I think you mean P0442.

See Post #2:

9 times out of 10, any code that is an EVAP code, is gas cap related...

How many miles? Mine did the same and found out the cat was bad. There is a recall on the cat and gm will replace for free if under 80k miles. Have a dealer check the cat and o2 sensors.

Just passed 99k on the odometer...drive it far to much for work, but that's a different story. Did some cleaning of the gas cap, made sure it was on tight, reset the codes, and haven't the codes return yet. *** knock on wood***

Hopefully that was the issue, but thanks for the heads up. If it comes back on again, I'll make sure to get those look at.

Anyone have pics or steps on how to change out the O2 sensors?

Thanks

I had the same thing happen to me. Took the gas cap off, cleaned it up, put it back on, reset the code, and 3000 miles later hasnt happened again.

That is replaced under the Federal mandated emissions warranty of 8 years or 80k. Or whatever it is now. That is not a choice GM had. They had to cover it.

However, typically, if a catalytic converter is bad (it's ability to store oxygen and create the chemical reaction), even at 80k, just replacing it isn't going to fix the root cause.

1) Get under car
2) Find O2 sensors (Pre-cat is up in the manifold, post-cat is right after the cat).
3) Apply some WD40 or other choice of penetrant to the sensor/sensor bung.
4) Disconnect electrical pigtail and anything affixing the wire to the O2 to the car
5) With a 3/4 or 7/8ths wrench (I can never remember which), loosen and remove the sensor(s). If you have the room/clearance and can get an O2 socket on there, all the better. But usually this isn't the case, even if you drop the exhaust hangers off and let the exhaust hang down a little.

However, replacement isn't always necessary, and you should monitor with a scan tool, their switch rates. If the switch rates are too quick, particularly the post-cat O2 sensor (which typically generates P0440/P0442), try removing it and cleaning it first. 90% of the time, that works and saves you $80~ on a new sensor.
