Most times when you put the key in the GXP, it wont turn unless you really mess with it. Doing some searching around and it seems the tumblers have wore out. I have a good ignition set in the 2000 SE parts car, does anyone know if I can swap that as well as the door locks with the SE?

The car came with only one key and no fobs. The SE has two keys as well as a few fobs, if they are compatible with the GXP I will have them programmed.

Yes you can swap them out. Don't forget about the trunk lock.

To get the fobs to work with the GXP, you'll need to swap the keyless module behind the rear seat. Bottom row, 2nd from the right: http://i675.photobucket.com/albums/vv11 ... G_5002.jpg

The module should have an FCC ID on it, you need to match that module to the keys.

You'll need to do the 30-minute relearn after you are done.

What is the re-learn procedure?

Once I swap that module, do I still have to have the fobs programmed for the car (or vice-versa) with a tech II or will that take care of the programming?

On some vehicles (Bonneville, Regal, Impala SS, Monte Carlo SS, and 2004+ Grand Prix) it will be necessary to perform this Security Relearn Procedure before the car can be started. You must complete the procedure without opening any of the vehicle doors or trunk. It's best to open the drivers window and reach inside the vehicle to complete the learn procedure. I like to have a battery charger hooked up during the process just in case.

Quote:
1. Set the parking brake to disable the daytime running lights system to avoid draining the vehicles battery.
2. Try to start the vehicle by turning the key to the START position (using a Master Pass-Key key, not a Valet key). Allow the key to fall back into the ON position. DO NOT TURN THE KEY TO THE OFF POSITION.
3. Observe the SECURITY telltale on the dashboard or driver information center. After approximately ten minutes it should turn off for the first time.
4. Turn OFF the ignition and wait for ten seconds.
5. Try to start the vehicle by turning the key to the START position (using a Master Pass-Key key, not a Valet key). Allow the key to fall back into the ON position. DO NOT TURN THE KEY TO THE OFF POSITION.
6. Observe the SECURITY telltale on the dashboard or driver information center. After approximately ten minutes it should turn off for the first time.
7. Turn OFF the ignition and wait for ten seconds.
8. Try to start the vehicle by turning the key to the START position (using a Master Pass-Key key, not a Valet key). Allow the key to fall back into the ON position. DO NOT TURN THE KEY TO THE OFF POSITION.
9. Observe the SECURITY telltale on the dashboard or driver information center. After approximately ten minutes it should turn off for the first time.
10. Turn OFF the ignition and wait for ten seconds.
11. Start the vehicle.

As far as reprogramming, I'm pretty sure you will need to get the fobs reprogrammed, but it won't hurt to try and see if they work just by swapping modules.

If I swap only the module do I still have to do the learn procedure?

I don't think you can just PnP modules. If it communicates with the BCM in any way/shape/form through a class 2 communication, it will need to be done with a scan tool.

I can look it up. Thankfully your's is a 2005, so no LAN difficulties added.

Sorry, I meant to say ISN'T a 2005 in reference to the OP's GXP. His is an '04. As you may or may not know, anythng 2005+ for GM is CAN compliant, which sometimes adds another level of difficulty to some diagnostics.

Anyway, back on topic, looking at all module replacements in the RKE (Remote Keyless Entry in GM speak), system on 2004 model year, it's P-n-P. No need for a Tech2 or other device to synchronize them to the BCM or other vehicle controllers.

Good to know, thank you.

Swapped the keyless entry module out with the one from the 2000 SE parts car, works perfect. No programming or security relearn necessary at all, the key fob worked instantly and started the car up seconds later.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Thats pretty awesome actually! That means if you go to a junk yard and see the keyfob in a car, you can grab it and the module and have a fully programmed keyless system.
