Hey guys quick question on the same topic... I bought my '04 Bonneville GXP with around 71k on it and now have gotten the "low oil level" warning twice and it now has around 83k. Is this the dreaded valve gasket leak? The car seems to run fine otherwise and there are no odd smells...

Also, is this something I HAVE to get fixed? I already have a project car so when I bought this, I wanted it as a reliable, daily driver that I didn't have to put a ton of money into. Thinking I may have missed that one and might consider selling it if I have to keep throwing money at it. Already have to fix the front engine mount, the fuel sending unit, and the rear door for sure...trying to figure out if its worth keeping around.

Thanks guys.

You never mentioned that you actually checked the oil level, did you?

If your oil level is indeed low, yes you need to fix that!

:stupid:

If you're leaking all your oil out, then yeah you have a problem.

Remember that these cars take 8 quarts, so if the low oil light is on, there is probably less than 2 quarts left inside...

I can proudly say I can avoid that embarrassment. I did and have checked the oil level multiple times and have changed the oil on it myself a few times now. I always put in the 7.5-8 quarts of new oil and check again after I'm done so I know its good to go. But of course when I got the warning signal today, it was quite low compared to where I left it....

I never have had an oil spot on the ground though. Is that normal? I'm guessing its burning off something? And how do I know its the valve cover leak? Do I need to get this repaired or is it something where I can just keep topping off the oil as needed? As much as I hate to say it cuz I do like the car, but if I can find a buyer, this car is getting shipped off... :dontknow:

The "low Oil" warning will come up when the engine is down by as little as one quart.

Gagger14-
I would say the oil is going somewhere. You may be burning it in the cylinders, but
more likely it is something else. I wouldn't ignore it. It is really hard to inspect
these engines for leaks because space is so tight. Have a pro do it if you can't
find anything, because you shouldn't just keep dumping more oil into it.

Does anyone know if oil can go into the coolant system if that darn coolant crossover
gasket fails on the N*? Mine has failed twice but coolant and oil ended up leaking
on the ground.

CMNT has also done his. I also replaced both of the cam cover gaskets. I will have to do them on the "V" also come spring.

I will save you the gorey details, but you DO NOT want to attempt this yourself, unless you're very mechanically inclined, have a lot of tools, and a lot of time and patience. The front isn't so hard to do, but it slows you down because you also have to remove the water pump drive pulley and it also makes a good idea to replace that seal from the cam cover also. The back is the real b*tch. It requires removal of the EGR, as well as working around an extremely tightly bound wiring harness that is invariably in the way. I think it took me about 3 hours to do the back one alone and I've done a couple of these before. The front was probably an hour.

Keep in mind, my times are with me knowing the in's-out's of the engine, the proper tools, and the GM training I have. If you don't have these, I'd say it's safe to at least double my times.

In the interim, a simple re-torqing of all cam cover bolts to spec will help. I think it's 89 lb/in or 10 newton meters. I think you'll find that from the normal heat cycling of the engine, 89lb/in of torque isn't sufficient to keep them sealed. I bet you'll find they're a smidge loose.
