So my moms 01 Aurora with the 4.0 v8 has been a great car, until recently.

The other day her ABS and service stability system lights came on. I figured it was just a wheel speed sensor that was out of whack and told her to go get it scanned to see what it said. She calls back and said the guy at the shop couldnt find anything wrong that would trip the codes and all the sensors read fine, so he replaced the brake control module.

Scans it again and finds there are still more codes. This time he said he "wiggled the wires" for the Wheel speed sensor and it tripped the code. SO he replaced that wheel speed sensor.

My mom picked up the car asked them for the EBCM they took off upon my request, and drove home. The next morning the ABS SSS and BRAKE light all came on. She took it back to the same shop and the mechanic says he didnt realize there was an "active brake system" on her car and there was a pump for that that he needed to replace.

So heres what I want to know

1. how do I find out if the EBCM he took off is shot or not.
2. What is the active brake system hes talking about

Charlie seems like a nice guy but is my mom getting taken for a ride here?

GM has a Service bulletin on this, or at least from the symptoms described, it sounds like this service bulletin. It specifically states DO NOT REPLACE EBTCM!!!

Was their any code like C1288 set with it? If so, it is due to excessive noise (electronic) in the steering wheel position sensor. It also says, DO NOT REPLACE the SWPS (steering wheel position sensor). If a C1287 is also set, something else is a problem and other diagnostics are needed.

The fix for this is a revised calibration for the EBTCM that effective reduces the sensitivity of the SWPS.

The service bulletin to look up is #04-05-25-001 issued 3/1/2004 titled "Reprogram EBTCM"

Also have them look at the wires for the WSS. I know that they can get corroded and send faulty signals.

Active brake system is the vehicle's stabilitrak system using brake inputs through the EBTCM to control yaw rates (actual vs. desired). In english, the stability system, if need be, utilizes the brakes, engaging them, when needed to bring the vehicle back under control.

Certainly always good to check. The only thing I would caution against, if this is a C1287 or C1288 code, the VSES (stabilitrak), doesn't use any inputs from the wheel speed sensors, so they wouldn't be the cause. Matter of fact, if these two codes are present, the ABS and traction control systems on the car are still fully functional. Which, if that's the case, the WSS are working properly. These codes are all SWPS dependant and are looking for lateral accelerometer failures, not rotational (I.E. wheel speed sensor input) failures.

If it's another code, then absolutely, this might be a cause.
