Okay, so here's a shot in the dark. I was volunteered by my girlfriends mother to change the spark plugs and wires on my girlfriends grandmothers Cadillac.

Unfortunately, I don't know the year, model, or even the engine with any certainty. If I had to guess I would say mid 90's sedan Deville. Unfortunately I don't know the engine (or even if its a Northstar so sorry if this is the wrong section).

Hopefully there is a fairly standard engine (32 valve northstar V8 maybe?) that someone can give me some tips on.

What I want to know is if there is anything that will prove tricky when trying to change the plugs. Is it the coil over plug type or normal plugs and wires, any tricky cylinders to reach or any special tools necessary?

Thanks in advance guys for any help, hopefully I will be able to give some more details later...

If it is a northstar, which it probably is, it's coil over plug, and it's going to be a PITA.

That's excellent news lol, just what I wanted to hear... Oh well, at least the wires will be cheaper.

Do I have to take off the two banks that cover the valve covers like on an aurora 4.0L ?

Another thought, since I would assume the caddy is RWD, does that mean the motor is mounted straight instead of transverse like the FWD cars are?

Yes, I didn't think about that. It might not be quite as hard as the FWD ones, but still probably be a chore. I don't think there are wires on those.

The last Caddy in the 90's to be rwd with a longitudal engine/driveline layout would've been a full size 1996 Sedan DeVille. After that, they were all FWD until the last generation CTS, and current gen STS and XLR.

With that said, Northstars/Shortstars are actually very easy to change plugs on. It is a CNP design, but there are no wires to even mess with. It's a whole coil module setup which has a spring mounted contact mechanism in the module that makes contact with the plug. So no worrying about trying to get them to "click" onto the plug. Just install the plug and torque down the coil modules and plug them into the harness.

The trick is, on a FWD layout, is getting to the plugs. Especially the backside. You will most likely have to fish around an EGR system, and work in the tight confines of the back of the motor area. If it is a Northstar, once you get to them you'll have to disconnect coil modules, remove the coil modules, disconnect from the wiring harness and remove the coil module bracket (GM calls it a coil cartridge), make sure NOT to lose the silicone "O" rings that seal the gap between the coil cartridge and the cam cover.

And Opti-Crap, err, Opti-Spark. Which it itself is part of the problem, not the solution. :laughing3:

If it's any earlier than a '00, and any later than a '96, then it's a piece of cake. Takes a little time, but it's not difficult. Now, if it's a '95 or older with the 4.9, get your swear jar ready.
