you have to get a head unit that you can plug in the steering wheel controls into

No you don't....so long as the stereo has IR remote, you can use the PAC steering wheel control unit. It converts the inputs from your wheel into an IR signal that your stereo understands.

Does your pioneer head unit have a wired remote option? Look for a mini headphone jack on the back. You can get interfaces that go from the wires of the car directly into your deck, without using IR signals. I find that all aftermarket steering wheel control adaptors do a poor job as far as predictability and response time.

Maybe tell us what Pioneer head unit you have?

There is the Pioneer CD-R5 optional Infrared remote for the Pioneer avh-5700 head unit, so you should be able to use the PAC-SWI IR adapter. It will convert your steering wheel controls to IR signals that will optically control the head unit. As mentioned, some people find the optical adapters to be kind of hit-or-miss. For what it's worth, that's what's available for you.

Another option that few have considered but some have found intriguing when going with an aftermarket stereo is to do away with steering wheel controls entirely and replace your steering wheel with one from an SE without the controls, so you don't have non-working buttons on your steering wheel.
