I just got my Bonneville and have noticed how the radio is very conveniently "plugged" into the dash. I have read posts here about people with aftermarket stereo installs. I need to know a few things before I tackle this. 1)What effect if any it will have on the onboard systems if the radio is removed? 2)Is it necessary to rewire from scratch since there seems to be no aftermarket interface? And last, what method is used to secure the stereo in the dash? I have a lot of knowledge about automotive stereo but I would like some advice from people who have done this before before I just jump in. I love my new ride but the stereo is quite lacking for my taste. Thank you for any help.

If you remove the factory hu then you need one of these adapters to keep your chimes working and the databus connected: Metra GMOS-05, PAC C2R-GM32R, Peripheral GMC02, or the Scosche DCGM14b. They range from $70-115 online and can be had from sonicelectronix.com or your local car audio dealer. You can also buy a $12 adapter but you lose your chimes and can disrupt the car's data communications. Either way I would run my own power and ground lines. The expensive adapters also support RAP aka the radio turns off when the door opens. There may be some trimming to make a reciever fit in the factory location, and you need a mounting kit of some sort. Keep the questions coming and welcome to the club!

Thank you for the reply, grandprix104. Wow. It seems strange for GM to integrate the audio system into the data bus as its called. I can understand sending the chimes there, but I cant imagine what else could be used. Seems like they really dont want you messing with the radio. At least there is a workaround. I will research this kit you speak of. It is a shame it is so much trouble just to install what you want in your car. I still love my Bonny, just a little disappointed. Thanks aagin for the info.

Would it be the same for a 1999 SSEi? as in same connectors etc?

Thanks in advance and hope I didn,t barge in.

Nope, 1999 still got it the easy way. $10 adapter from wal-mart is all you need.
