My current head unit doesn't recognize CDs when they're inserted, its always saying "check cd", even if it's brand new.

And then the other day it hit me that I happen to have a couple extra Pontiac head units lying around (GrandPrix and Firebird style), and I was wondering if its possible to swap the CD drives.

I successfully did this several years back, but they were both Grand Prix units.

So I'm hoping someone may have some pics of a drive out of a Bonneville head unit so I can compare them.
Or even better if someone knows if they're compatible.

Thanks in advance guys.

Drew

Unfortunately only a Bonneville one will work. The Bonneville used a proprietary connector called a Dock-N-Lock, nothing else will work.

I have many good used radios if you're interested, but they must be programmed with a Tech2 scantool or similar.

I read this as meaning, can he change the mechanism inside the head unit? Personally, I don't know for sure. Many of the radios seem similar so it may be possible. But, I had some GM radios that appeared to be identical however the part numbers for some internal components were different and were not interchangeable.

This was my experience with an '00 and '02 Bose.
http://www.pontiacbonnevilleclub.com/forum/post117813.html#p117813
I found another '02 head unit, swapped the internal CDs and it worked fine.

To save the Tech2 charge you can see if Andrew has a head unit from a Bonneville close to yours and swap the CD into yours.
Dealer Tech2 charges these days can far exceed the cost of the head unit.

Yes, the actual mechanism is what I was asking about.

But after looking at Roadrunner's thread, I'm going to have to assume that my '05 is more like the '02 then the '00 style.

On top of that, my drive has a 14 pin connector, so it wouldn't match with either the '00 or the '02.

So probably not my '05 either.

Thanks for the responses guys!
Not what I wanted to hear, but what I needed to.

I replaced just the CD drive in my 2004 Tahoe and it worked fine.
I purchased it from replacementradios.com.
Unfortunately they don't have one for the GXP, as I need one myself.

So if you can find one somewhere, but I think it needs to be the
exact unit, as I had to transfer some wiring and stuff from my old
drive to the replacement.

You could buy the whole unit from Andrew and just swap the CD drive to
avoid the dealer trip and charge.

I actually have a disc changer and I love it (save for the fact that it hates bumps and loves to skip, if anyone has thoughts on how to eliminate or just soften this, I'm all ears), but a lot of it just comes down to the convince of not having to pop my trunk t ok change/ add a new disc (ie, me being lazy)
