So I have been searching around for a good HU for the 2000, I wanted touch screen, ipod, 3 preouts, and GPS if it was reasonable and I came across an open box item on discount from sonicelectronics. I got the Pioneer AVIC-X850BT http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/ ... VIC-X850BT now I just need to clarify what adapters I need to KEEP steering wheel and door chimes with the BOSE, I don't have onstar either. I tried looking for the writeup on this but couldn't find it for some reason.

This looks like a nice Head Unit. But I do not see that it has provisions for steering wheel controls (looked in the installation guide and manual). If it turns out that it does, go on the PAC website and find the right one. The Bonneville uses resistive controls. You need a Metra GMOS-09 adaptor to connect to the dock and lock. It will say to cut one wire for 2000-2001 but the labels are backwards so cut the wire that says cut for 2002-2005 instead. The instructions with the Metra are good otherwise but make sure you connect one of the red wires to the antenna module enable on the dock and lock (B3 - third wire on the top from the right) or you will get no AM-FM reception. The 2 red wires are 12 Volts and are only powered when the car is on and controlled by retained accessory power. You will have to cut out the back of the radio plastic to install, be careful not to damage the ribbon cable to the dock and lock. You need a VW to Motorola adaptor for the antenna in. They are available from Metra or on eBay. Put in the back-up camera if you can - Boyo makes some nice ones. You will have to buy some cables to install the hook up to iPod or android.. The installation guide tells you what you need. the Metra GM Multi-Kit 95-2001 will help with the double-DIN installation. You will need the sides but probably not the front unless the front of the head unit is smaller than the dash trim opening. You may have to cut the dash trim or install outside the dash trim if it is too large to fit behind the dash trim.

Mount the GPS antenna under the dash pad behind the light sensor. It is not hard to remove the dash pad. The mic will work well on the stering column). Post any other questions and I will try to answer them.

I have just installed a pioneer avh-p1400dvd. I bought everything from amazon.
Metra 40-VW10. 10 inch vw antenna adaptor
Metra Aswc-1 universal steering wheel control
Metra double din install kit, only used the side mounts, the radio came with a plastic front piece to cover gap
Metra GMOS-09 I didn't cut any wire(don't know if it is hurting anything)
Didn't have to do anything with the antenna module.
Everything seems to be working fine.

It's a nice unit. How about posting a picture of the install?

Sooo I went to install the HU this weekend, after spending hours wiring and cutting and routing everything I plugged it in and......Nothing :banghead: So I triple checked all my wires and what not to ensure they were right, they were. So then I hooked the stereo up to a battery and it powered up fine. Basically my GMOS-09 was bad out of the box :banghead: There went my good mood!

I decided I would send this one back to the seller, but since I had taken the time to solder everything I'm buying another one and swapping that box into my wires so that it hopefully works. new one should be here by friday, at least this gives me time to mount my GPS antenna in a better spot.

In other news I had to go to my local best buy to get the mounting kit. They are building a bigger store in town and moving next week so they had a lot of wall mount stuff for cheap so I scored these!
Image
The one on the left is a Polk Audio PA880, its a mono 800 rms sub amp the same as what I have in the 88. 98 dollars
The right one is a Polk Audio Pa330, it's a 2 channel 100 watt rms amp. I'm using this to power these! 75 dollars
http://www.polkaudio.com/products/mm691

I found a good ebay deal for new unopened box for 140 and change!

so when you hooked it up, there was no power to the radio? Did you check the 12V out from the 2 red wires on the GMOS-09 with the ignition switch in the acc or on position?. The original wires in the dock and lock wires are on the RAP circuit and will only be hot when the key is turned on. I have never heard of one of these units being bad. Metra does have a good tech support line

We tested for ignition voltage in ACC, on with car not running and car running. I also bypassed the 2 ingition wires coming out of the GMOS and powered the radio through the orange lumination wire coming off the 32 pin connector and got no sound through my speakers. Audio or chimes. I think I just got a bad board in the GMOS unfortunatly, ill see what happens when the new one gets here. If it doesn't work ill post and try to troubleshoot more.

Had this

Got this

which I won't believe will work for what I have planned. I assume you use the line outs on the HU to power this one correct? If so I don't see a way to run my sub amp and 2 channel amp out as well........

Actually could I just cut off the rca plugs and wire my speaker outs into the gmos harness? I'm not sure if the box will accept the higher voltage speaker outs?

The older unit is designed for line out, not speaker out. Most HU have outputs for both, so just connect it to the line out outputs on your HU with short RCA male to male cables and you should be fine. You should cut the third wire from the end (blue white) and do not cut the 6th wire from the end they are probably marked wrong - then your amp should work. Gosh 4 months ago I was looking for that older unit for my computer line outputs and I called about 50 places and nobody had one. They stopped making them over 2 years ago.

Thats what I thought, the thing is that I will be adding 2 amps in addition to the bose. one for the 6x9's and 1 for the subs so i need the line outs free.

As far as your going, I would just bypass the BOSE. Its a good system on its own but why bother when you have your own amps? it could cause you more issues then its worth. Thats my suggestion.

Your HU should have a separate output for the subs. And what are you using the 6 x 9 for? If they are triaxial, just substitute them for the rear door speakers line outs and leave the rear door speakers disconnected. If there is no sub out then use the sub out from the Bose to the original 6 x 9 to your sub amplifier as it has the crossover built in to the amp.

DCJREDLINE: I would bypass the bose however I don't have door speakers to replace the stock ones right now and the only reason im replacing the 6x9's is because one is blown.

Bob:iI plan to use 2 of the preouts for amps in the near future and would like them left open. Also I may be getting an outboard crossover at some point for seperate amos. Basically im trying to play ahead for the future.

I wouldn't let a $100 pair of speakers lead me into the integration mess that is the BOSE system...and I have been a certified mobile electronics installer for over 15 years. lol

Its not impossible but it sure is a pain in the rear.

agree with DCJREDLINE, the impedance is way low I think only 2 ohms on the rear shelf speakers and they are in series, deep six the Bose. If you need more line outs Sosche makes a 4 channel speaker out to line out adaptor for about 20 bucks.

So I feel like an idiot, apparently I had cut a wire without realizing it on the GMOS figured that out and spliced it back together then I learned that there must be some that have the correct labeling for which wire to cut for the amp turn on. I cut the one labeled for 2003-05 but It didn't work so i moved that pin over to the slot I cut and it fired up. After that I installed my new 6x9's and the small amp for it then realized that while the speakers sound good all the rattles from the stupid plastic rear deck sounded awful. Soooooo I went a bit overboard with the rest and built this!

Image

Image

It lays under the carpet cover and is made out of 3/4" MDF (medium density fiberboard) It as a very good material for acoustics and what all good sub boxes are made out of. It basically stops/absorbs vibrations so that the speaker makes only music and not rattles from mating surfaces. Now I have crystal clear sound out of my speakers literally NO rattles. I also relocated the couple modules that were hung to the plastic piece to under the seat. one was the compass antenna and one was the receiver for the keyless entry, both still work great with no loss of range or anything.

So after that I needed somewhere good to mound my amp. This led into this...

Image

I took the spare sub box from the 88 and used a precision power sub I had laying around. The 6x9's are running 100 watts each and the sub is running 800 at 2 ohms. This setup sounds amazing! I'll get some more pictures up of the HU and everything installed back to stock.
