Tape player doesn't play and cd player only works on one side of the car (yes balance is correct).

Bose radio still jams out pretty good and my son always hooks up this Monster brand cable to stream music when were are together which also "streams" plenty O static and he is constantly relocating it for better reception and screwing with it so gets irritating.

I am not the multi thousands of dollar kind of stereo guy and for that matter I don't think I have ever spent $500 on a system so I am cool with using used speakers (if not almost wore out obviously) or used amp and maybe a head unit but would prefer to buy the HU new.

All that said can someone please advise me on our 2000 SSEI what is the most simple to install (obviously stock if someone has an original that all broken on mine wiorks on theirs) or aftermarket. We do like to jam out but we are not perfectionists so loud with SOME distortion is okay and expected with a low budget build.

After the HU the next thing I will invest in new is some subs because my son loves the bass thump.

So any quick tips ? Thanks for your time.

John

A double din unit will almost always require you to cut the back of the dash out, and even installing the single din sized stereo is a squeeze if the bulkhead isn't cut. The reason being is that aftermarket stereos are deeper than the factory unit, and the factory unit uses "dock and lock" wiring, so the mating plug juts out of the bulkhead.

For minimum hassle, stick with a stock headunit that's been rebuilt or brand new. A brand new headunit will not require a dealer to reprogram it, a used one will.

Sandrock,

Thank you very much for that information. So glad I didn't just go out and buy something to only find that out when everything was laying all over the place.

I will put a wanted ad out for a new or rebuilt unit. Any idea what search info I should use? 2000 model General Motor Bose radio or something?

Thank you again

If you want to be specific, 2000-2002 Bose. 2003 models look like '00-02 but are Monsoon and not Bose. '04-05 models are black instead of that Pontiac grey.

Keep in mind a used one will require a trip to the dealer to get it out of "Oh $hit I've been jacked!" mode. New ones still exist and pop up on ebay from time to time, they are pricey but won't require a dealer trip, since it will store the vehicles VIN code on inital power-up.

EDIT: Get one with a tape player. You can buy an adapter that goes in like a tape but has wiring attached to it for an MP3 player or such.

I also recommend just buying a repaired or a used factory radio. I just changed my 2000 bonneville factory radio out for a double din head unit and this required a lot of dremeling in the radio compartment to fit the new unit. I think I spent about 4 hours removing plastic and shop vac-ing it out. Works good now, but it does take some patience.

Pictures can be seen here of the radio removed, and what it looks like..

you should be able to get a stock Bonneville unit from harofreak00 of on E-bay at a good price. You can always wire a sub to one of the rear speaker outputs that are located in the trunk on the Bose amp.
