I have an issue with the factory wiring. A while ago I cut the plug off and have since rewired it. The power antenna doesnt engage and the lights "flicker" while turning the "twilight sentinel" knob and the electronic climate control freezes and after some time has 3 dashes. ALL of the speakers function great, the steering wheel controls work great, and the unit illuminates. My question is, what wire might I have crossed?

I followed this:

1996 Pontiac Bonneville Car Stereo Wire Diagram
Car Radio Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Orange
Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: Yellow
Car Radio Ground Wire: Black
Car Radio Illumination Wire: Gray
Car Stereo Dimmer Wire: Brown
Car Stereo Antenna Trigger Wire: Pink
Car Stereo Amp Trigger Wire: N/A
Car Stereo Amplifier Location: N/A
Car Audio Front Speakers Size: 4″ x 6″ Speakers
Car Audio Front Speakers Location: Doors
Left Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Tan
Left Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Gray
Right Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Light Green
Right Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Dark Green
Car Audio Rear Speakers Size: 6″ x 9″ Speakers
Car Audio Rear Speakers Location: Rear Deck
Left Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Brown
Left Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Yellow
Right Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Dark Blue
Right Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Light Blue

Factory wiring diagram:

There's two yellows, one for dimmer and one for Radio power on in accy/run.
Don't get those two mixed up!

Thank you very much! One last question? If I had the dimmer and switched power mixed would the unit still work? that is the case for me. I also have 3 yellows instead of two, I assume the 3rd one is the power antenna as I do NOT have a pink wire.

Potentially yes, because it goes hot when lights or parking lights are on. To distinguish between the light dimmer yellow and the radio power yellow, you can pull fuse #8B, which will kill power to the interior lights and the light dimmer yellow. Pulling fuse #8D will kill power to the radio yellow. That should nail down which is which for you.

Here's a fuse box diagram. The columns are lettered left to right A through E. The rows are numbered from the bottom to the top 1 through 9. 8B and 8D are both on the second to top row, on either side of the middle column.

Okay, I will pull the fuses to check those wires. In the diagram I am using, it defines the dimmer and illumination wires as gray and brown? something dowsnt add up.

My diagram is for the 1997; it is possible that wiring colors were different for 1996.

Black plug: orange, yellow, green, gray, yellow, black, light green, dark green, tan, gray.

Gray plug: brown, yellow, dark blue, light blue, dark green, light green.

Is this familiar to anyone here?

The harness or stereo should be labeled. Here are the colors/positions from the '98 CSM:

BLCK connector:
1: Grey (LHF SPKR)
2: Tan (LHF SPKR)
3: Dark Green (RHF SPKR)
4: Light Green (RHF SPKR)
/////////////////////////
5: Black (ground)
6: Yellow (IP Lamp output)
7: Grey (IP Lamp Feed)
8: Dark Green (power antenna feed)
9: Yellow (IGN+)
10: Orange (BAT+)

Grey connector:
11: Black (GND with UZ8)
12:
13:
14: Light green (Remote control signal)
15: Dark green (diagnostic E&C)
16:
/////////////////////////
17: Light Blue (RHR SPKR)
18: Dark Blue (RHR SPKR)
19: Yellow (LHR SPKR)
20: Brown (LHR SPKR)

I see a lot of light green and dark green wires. Check 15 and 8,

Wow, that helps greatly! Thank you. Will Check greens. What does e&c mean? Are they wheel controls? Also what are the slash marks?

Switching those greens worked like a charm! The stock head unit functions flawlessly now but now with the new sony dsx s100 unit hooked up, I am having an issue. Whenever the sound is loud or after a certain amount of time the unit will power off immediately then power back on and it will repeat itself. The "auto off" is off and the unit has been reset.

Edit the title of this post to stick a [SOLVED] at the beginning.
Good work, everybody.
Lessons to others: Don't cut the factory connector off your radio wiring harness! Get a simple factory to aftermarket radio wiring harness adapter!

Yes. My lesson was definitely learned. When I change the stereo in my firebird, I will not make the same mistake.
