I've got the headliner pulled out of our semi, and want to upgrade it's two pathetic 5-1/4's. There is room for maybe an 8" subwoofer, so can I use one of the unused rear channels of the HU to drive it? It'll be mounted a foot from my head, so volume isn't much of an issue. Do I need a crossover?

Or will new 3-way 5-1/4's provide adequate sound by themselves? Any help would be appreciated...i dunno jack about aftermarket audio :ack:

i can almost guaruntee you'll be pretty happy with upgraded 5 1/4's. Meh, personally, i don't think the HU would put out enough power for the sub to perform as good as it would/should with a small amp.

Go with the 5 1/4's, and if you would like real nice highs to go with the midrange sounds.... get the component set, that comes with crossovers.
here's a couple ideas, depending on price:

HIGHLY recommend these:
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_737 ... 5.2C-.html

and if you wanna go super nice.... Rockford Fosgate has got you set up.
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_188 ... 152-S.html

If you do want to get a small woofer, I'd be more than happy to help ya out with that also, with wiring, placement, what to get, stuff like that.

EDIT: chances are you'll get vocals through the woofer to by using one of the rear speaker outs on the radio, depending on what HU it is.

Thanks for the advice! The components are a no-go. Gotta have integrated tweeters in the 5.25's.

Since you think new 5.25's by themselves will be adequate, i think i'll just stick with that. The original speakers were so pathetic that i didn't have much hope of decent sound from such small speakers.

I also have to have the truck back together monday, so i have to find something in a brick&mortar store this weekend.

Stock amplifiers in a basic radio are pretty much not bridgeable, so you'd have to either pick a channel or have two subwoofers. My advice would be to get something like this:
http://signature.crutchfield.com/s_1366 ... tml?tp=111

It's expensive, but it delivers fantastic low range without much power (and the 40 watt requirement SHOULD be fulfilled, since most decks are between 35-50 watts per channel.)

If it's a walmart or meijer special, Try to shoot for pioneer. They won't sell brands like I posted.

Goin to Fry's Electronics tonight. They carry polk among others.

Yeah, the pick-a-channel problem is kinda why i didn't want to go with a standard 6x9, since they all seem to be 2-ways or higher.

I got the Polk db's. They actually make enough bass that the bulkhead rattled horribly, and i had to take it back out and line it with weatherstrip and old rags  Sounds awesome now!

You technically can, but it sounds like crap. Like 99bonnieSE mentioned, you'll get more than just the bass through it. You'll also only get one side. I agree with upgrading the 6x9s and the 5.25s, you'll have plenty of bass.

It doesn't have any 6x9's, just two 5-1/4's. It's all back together now and i'm happy. By the way the plastic bulkhead rattled, it couldn't have stood any more bass without a ton of dynamat.
