This recent cold weather is causing the car to shake a bit and sound like an old V8 when I first start it in the morning. I also get a ticking from under the hood that reflects rpm speeds. This all stops once the coolant reaches about ~140-150F (the ticking fades as temps increase).

To me it sounds like the sticky lifter I had in my old 70 Dodge, but I think I'm wrong. Thoughts?

Good chance of it. Likely that it's gummed up or that something is holding its check valve open, or something of the sort. Personally, I'd suggest putting seafoam in the oil (amount per instructions on the can) and run it for the rest of your drain interval...and maybe put it in again next time you change it. Good way to break down the varnish that builds up in the crankcase.

To go a little further, there are other oil system cleaners, some are actually a whole system with steps and everything if you really want to clean it all out...but it certainly doesn't end up being very budget friendly...so seafoam might be the best idea...and just keep running it through with every change until it goes away. I know I used it a few times on my sticky lifters on the 89 and by the time I sold it, it was less of the loud clacking that I started with, and ended up as more of a quieter click.

Switch to Amsoil Synthetic  It'll clean your motor out pretty nicely. I can't begin to stress how beautifully brand new my engine looked when I pulled it and tore it down to do the cam swap.

Since I just remembered a very good treatment, I'll post it.

Auto-RX. It's an awesome crankcase cleaner. You run it about 3oz to a quart (1:10.6 ratio)

Details here... http://www.auto-rx.com/pages/fast_track_app.html

I meant to post in here sooner, but that rough start up you are describing is exactly what happened with my car when the LIM gasket went.

Ditto here. Mine sounded like a single lifter rattling on a cold morning. It stopped after the LIM gaskets were replaced. Someone on here said it was probably the coolant getting into the oil and thinning it, which allowed it to drain back out of the lifter overnight.

Thanks for the info. I'll have Intense do an overhaul this spring.

Considering how cold it got over this past weekend, it could very well be a lifter that got starved of oil for a little while. If it starts happening all the time, I'd consider pulling the valve covers and manifold and check the lifters.

If you want to save yourself a drive to Ohio, have Sinister Drag Design take a look at it. I feel like i'm beating a dead horse every time i bring this up but i can't see driving all the way to Ohio to have a company who hasn't MANUFACTURED a new 3800 part in almost a year and seems to be heading more towards G8's look at your motor, when there's a company that's involved with numerous impressive 3800 builds locally available.

I'm sure they are concentrating on the G8, but they still have heavy support for the 3800 because of the huge performance market it provides.

I trust the people at Intense. Nothing against Sinister Drag Design, I've never been there...but an employee at Intense let me stay at their place over night last time I had work done to a car. Talk about service! :)

Also the reason I said I'd have Intense do an "overhaul" is because I plan on having them install a cam. So 2 birds with 1 stone.
