My girlfriend's '02 LeSabre has recently developed as slightly rough idle. It sometime misses and the RPM will come up to keep the engine from stalling. It will sometimes miss under light acceleration. If you accelerate a little harder it wont miss. It is yet to actually stall out.
I thought she got bad gas and put half a tank if premium in it. It got better but returned the next day. Transmission shifts a little abruptly. Fuel consumption seems a little high, too.
The CEL came on but shortly after I put the premium in, it went out before I could hook my scan tool up to it.
I'm thinking MAP sensor. Googled "bad MAP sensor symptoms" and thats what the car seems to be doing. Seems too intermittent to be ignition (coil, wires, or plugs), and a vacuum leak would cause it to run like crap all the time.
Ideas??

What codes did the scan tool list as current and/or history?

My scan tool only shows current codes. The CEL went out shortly after I put the premium gas in but before I could use my scan tool. The problem is still there even though the CEL light went out.
It would be a big help if I knew what kicked the light on in the first place.

My advice would be to get a scan tool capable of reading historical and also basic stream data.

For example you could quickly hook up the tool when its having issues and observe the MAP sensor voltage -- if you see it's not moving with throttle position changes then you have isolated your problem to either the sensor or the wiring for the MAP sensor.

Throwing a map sensor at the vehicle if you find that the vehicle actually has a misfire and is throwing injector code(s) is chasing your tail and wasting money.

If I may recommend a product.....

I use BlueDriver to read codes on my car - OBDII, of course. It connects to your phone via bluetooth, and can read codes, clear them, run a smog test, etc. I have used it on not just my Bonneville, but on my dad's Sierra, my mom's Equinox, my uncle's Cruze, and a coworker's Wrangler. She works like a charm.

Only issue I found was the price - $100 (when I bought it 2 years ago). But BlueDriver is totally worth it.
