I just took my 2001 SE in for an alignment. I just changed struts, links and sway bar bushings.

I told them I had the 70 MPH death shake.

They said I need both front axles and new motor mounts.

It also just started to shake upon acceleration.

How much work is changing front axles and motor mounts?

Can that cause my shakes?

First, just change the front motor mount. You can either replace it with an OEM style mount, but they're known not to last. Or talk to Andrew about getting a boat roller mount, which is much more durable.

Either way, replacement is easily done under an hour, even your first time.

Thanks,

Can a bad motor mount cause shaking?

I wish I knew how to upload pics.

Upon investigating the condition of my motor mount, ALL 3 bolts holding front motor mount bracket to engine were missing.

Thank God I had bolts at work. Jacked up motor in parking lot, new bolts, good to go.

Easiest way to upload pics is make an Imgur account, upload them there, and then post the IMG code into the forum box here.

When my OEM style front mount was worn out, it caused shaking while accelerating and a persistent shake at highway speeds. Replacing an axle is way more involved than the motor mount, so always start with the easy and cheap methods/fixes.

Honestly, I really owe you a case of beer and a big thank you.

If you didn't mention the motor mount I would have never looked.

Send me your email address and I'll send you the pic.

Thanks,
Lee

New issue -

Changed the front mount with no issues.

However when I was under car I saw there was grease everywhere!! My first thoughts were split CV boot. There was even grease sprayed on the coil pack.

I cant find a cut anywhere!

Any suggestions?

check that the boots are nice and round - once, a rag got caught in mine and squeezed the grease out but boot was intact but not round like the other side- if grease is on coil pack, I would inspect the pass side boot.

I looked at lunch. Definitely the passenger side.

Here's what I think happened.

Last week when I installed new struts I think I let the knuckle hang too low and possibly pulled the boot away from shaft. Tonight I'll see if I can push the silver band back on more.

Problem is...how do I re-pack the boot with CV grease if that's the case?

you have to remove it(axel) and then there os one large bolt that removes the end - then you remove, repack and install - or you can get a zipper/glued kit - https://www.amazon.ca/Dorman-HELP-614-6 ... 9826&psc=1

IS it outter or inner boot?

It's the large one closest to center of engine.

np, yes, when I had the collapsed boot, the mechanic wanted to change whole axle - I said why, just the boot is kaput - he says well, people just change the whole axle

so beware of uneeded work

I have a bad shake on acceleration, I think the axle shaft is bad anyway.

It's possible that if it ran long enough without grease you might have ruined the metal joints.
I would just put a new axle shaft on.
They are not that expensive.

get it off the ground and put in drive and idle idle( up against a strong wall) and you will see if its bent and which one -
