so I get a rattle from the cat at start and under any throttle - but no code - so the cat biscuit is in pieces but still working? exhaust smells normal.

what is a good direct fit - or is weld in better - I supposed to use the california cat in Canada

It could be a heatshield rattling. I've wrapped bailing wire around one before to keep it quiet. Lol!

Do you have any other symptoms to suspect it's impeding exhaust flow? Broken biscuits seldom flow freely. They also don't break all willy nilly. There either needs to be a hit to the catalytic converter that would leave evidence, or they blow out because they become a restriction. They also seldom stay in the converter housing, as they typically end up in the muffler.

What's the mileage on the cat?

I used this on my car for replacement:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001H ... UTF8&psc=1

Tried a smaller cat before this one and the car still reeked

Any time I've put on a new cat, it smelled for a little while.

285,000 KLMS and close to 20 years all original exhaust.
