Year and Trim: 2003 Bonneville SSEi
I have a warped front rotor on my 2003 SSEi which isn't too badly borked and doesn't cause any problems around town. I had my Bonneville up to extra legal highway speeds recently, and during that event, I had to jump on the brakes. When I did, I got an unexpected nasty "flutter" from my front end. The last time I had this issue was due to a bad front wheel bearing. My SSEi has about 77,000 miles on it, and I replaced one front bearing at around 60,000 miles and the other about 10,000 miles later (yea, I should have done both at the same time). I was thinking maybe tie-rods, but when I put each front tire up in the air, I could rock the passenger side wheel vertically (top and bottom), which means a bearing issue. This was the side with the newer bearing, so WTF, I think! I grabbed my torque wrench and 34mm socket, and found the hub nut was not at all close to being fully torqued down. I tightened it up to the correct 118 lb-ft, checked the wheel for play again, and there was none. Just to be thorough, I checked the torque on the opposite side, and while it was not loose enough to cause any play, it was also not torqued to spec, so I tightened that side up too.

I used new (GM) hub nuts when I replaced both bearings, so I was not expecting them to loosen up. Is this a common quirk with our cars, or did I just get "lucky?"

Not 100% sure, but I used red loctite on my nuts to prevent this. Haven't checked on them since replacing both hubs.

Next time I have to replace a hub, Loctite is going on the threads. Until then, whenever I have to take the front tires off, popping out the center cap, and checking the hub nut torque once the wheels are on the ground seems like a good idea. It's not like it would take a whole lot of extra time to do.
