I am stumped as to why I cannot get a correct reading on Tranny fluid dipstick. I have been maintaining my own vehicles for over 45 years. This should be a no-brainer procedure. I have the car warmed up and idling on level ground in my garage. Ran it through the gears and then idled for 5 minutes. It's 67 degrees outside.

I pull the dipstick and the fluid is 6 or 8" the way up the dipstick. Crazy. Wipe then repeat; repeat, repeat, no change. What the heck is going on?

Fluid is nice red color. Not burnt. No smell.

I had this same issue on my prior trans fluid and filter change. The car ended up being about a quart overfilled.

On the other hand though, I currently have this same problem with my engine oil dipstick and I can't figure it out either.

I'd do a pan drop and try and record how many quarts come out. It should be 7-8. Then refill with the proper amount.

Do you seem to be having any transmission problems?

In a minor way, yes. The reason I started checking the fluid level a few months ago (even back then there was foam) was because of a slight slipping when first starting from a stop. 0 through 20 miles per hour. Not a hard bad shift from 1st to 2nd, but rather a very light stuttering type shift (which I would imagine most people would call - slipping or slippage).

Again, I emphasize that when the vehicle sits overnight and I check the trans level - there is no foam and the level is about 8" up the stick. The fluid is a very nice, clear, bright red color. When idling and checking per correct procedure there is "Foam" 8 " up the stick. No way to check what the actual level of the fluid is.

That's the best additional info that I have to provide.

I have been thinking about changing the fluid and filter, adding Lucas Trans Fix, and trying to fill it again. However, I've been using Amsoil trans fluid and that can get a bit expensive. I'm thinking about adding normal Castrol even though the torque converter still has Amsoil in it. I'll probably will have to ask Amsoil on that one.

Thanks for responding to my post question.

FROM MISTER TRANSMISSION site-

High level and pink foamy appearance:

If your transmission fluid is high and has a “strawberry milkshake” look to it, then there is a problem. This is usually caused by a failure in your radiator. The transmission fluid is cooled by a cooler built into your radiator. Sometimes when the radiator fails, engine coolant is allowed to cross-over into the transmission cooling tubes and contaminates the transmission fluid. Have your transmission inspected as soon as possible to avoid further damage.

how is the coolant level?

I am unable to check the coolant level because of the foam. That is why I am submitting this thread to the forum; to find out why there is foam.

Thanks for the info from Mister Transmission.

OK, so you have foam in trans fluid and the coolant?if that is indeed true, I would drain the rad and fill with water - drive for a bit and see if the trans fluid is seeping into the rad - if so, check and replace rad. and change trans fluid twice to get rid of all the contaminants

Okay. Well, I guess I have some work to do. I'll try to determine the radiator issue and go from there.
