Just a thought.
Can you rock the engine forward to give you more room to reach the rear spark plugs?
I was thinking of taking off the front mount (boat roller type) and seeing if the engine moves forward for better access.
Don't know if anyone has tried this.
Just curious.

hi, I dont believe you can shift the engine. just get on top and get the rear from laying on the engine.
be careful around throttlebody- there is a thin brittle vacuum line under the elec harness that will crack easily - about an hour for the rear with a universal joint to get to the plugs should do it

Undoing the front mount will allow for a little more room in back. For the most part, you just have to do it by touch.

Removing the Alternator and support brace will give you better access. It's really not a terrible job...I'd do it again without hesitation. The Astro I replaced this with...nope, and nope. Need tiny man hands and extensions and...nope. Matter of a fact, I bought it 5 years ago, and I have the pack of Iridium plugs I bought for it sitting on the desk right now waiting for a buyer...

One more question on the spark plug wires.
I have never replaced spark plugs or wires myself.(always took it to a garage)
My brother in law insists on doing it.
Do you reuse the heat shields or do they come with the new wire set?
If you do reuse them do they just fit over the boots?

You reuse them.
They easily slide onto the boots.
Be sure to buy good quality wires, such as the OE ACDelco wires.
The cheaper Denso wires may also be a safe bet, as Denso is a manufacturer.
If you buy from Rockauto, don't forget the look in the Vendor's forum for their discount code
The only caveat for your brother in law is to very carefully route the wires, particularly on the firewall side, where you want to avoid closeness to the O2 sensor wire and the exhaust manifold.
Hopefully, he will also know to use dielectric silicone on the insides of the boots.

Last week I helped my brother in-law replace spark plugs, wires and valve cover gaskets on his 2001 SLE.
With the use of his hoist we did replace the rear plugs from the bottom.
We did remove the alternator and bracket by the water pump.(we also put in new aluminum elbows)
By lowering the hoist to the proper level we were able to do it while sitting in a couple of rolling office chairs.
I cannot say enough about the hoist he bought around 3 years ago at a swap meet.
He keeps saying that he will never spend a better $2000.00.
It does help that he has a pole barn with plenty of headroom.
