Bought a new starter, Just finished the installation, connected everything correctly and the starter engaged, however it isnt catching the fly wheel at all. Any ideas on how to fix this? to the best of my knowledge the starter didn't come with shims.

Thanks Everyone!

First thing I'd do is look up the part number on the manufacturer's website or Rockauto and make sure the starter you got was for a supercharged engine.

The naturally aspirated engine uses a different starter.

Here's RAs page for the s/c starter

Yep did that, I matched the Part numbers before I bought it, However I did buy it off Amazon at discount price, but the part numbers still matched up so I didn't think much of it.

Here it is : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005A ... UTF8&psc=1

Well it is a part that DB Electric lists for a SC Bonneville.
I suspect that you may need to buy shims.
Take the starter out and match it up to the old one to see how many shims you will need.
A defective part is, of course, another possibility.
On Monday you can call DB to confirm or refute this.

Yeah I looked closely at the part and they look different, I noticed this before but assumed it was a updating design, But I suspect that even though they claim its Compatible , It actually isn't. So I'll take it out , and order the exact one from the GM dealership, sad thing is its about 4 times as much.

Why buy from a dealership? You may as well save some money and order from Rockauto .
There's a discount code in the Pontiac Bonneville Club Vendor's forum.

All the 3800 gear reduced starters will fit any 3800... You should never have to shim a 3800 starter unless the starter drive is complete junk..

An L36 Starter is a 1.4kw and most of the SC starters are 1.6-1.7kw.. The SC starters are a little stronger as it has another belt to turn as well as the supercharger..

It sounds like the starter is incorrect even tho it had the correct part number, or its a faulty unit.

First thing I would do is drop it down and use jumper cables to make sure the solenoid is working and the gear is coming forward to engage into the flywheel. Secondly, I'd compare the old with the new and see what the differences are. Is the housing on the new one made in a way that holds the starter farther away from the flywheel? You can always use the motor from the new starter with the "snout" from the old starter and the mounting problem will be corrected. If you want to, you can replace the brass insert in the "snout" of the starter, since that's the only part that would be replaced if you rebuilt the starter. Unless there is a terrible grinding noise when you attempt to start it from the starter gear binding, then shims will move you farther away from the flywheel. Don't know if that's the solution.
