My wife's 2001 Bonneville SLE has another bad rear shock mount.
This is the second one in less than a year.(Bad roads in Wisconsin after Winter)
There is a clunking noise coming from the rear passenger side in the trunk.
I checked it out and sure enough it was the mount.
The metal pipe inside the mount is sticking up about 3/4".(same as last time)
I know that she does not pay attention to the pot holes when she drives and probably hits the same ones every day.
When I drove the car last night I asked her when did the clunking noise start?
She answered what clunking noise!!! ( That's the advantage of having the radio turned up loud)
I guess that is part of the deal after 40 years of marriage.
My questions is who makes the best shock mount or are they all just stamped out in the same factory?
I have tried Moog and Duralast but it doesn't seem to matter.
Should I just buy on price and put some in stock?

Thanks.

Have you considered the possibility that the shock has frozen, so that it acts like a battering ram every time your wife hits a bump or that it has lost its oil so the excessive bouncing is ruining the mounts?
Many people here use KYB or Monroe shock mounts.

I do not believe the shock is frozen.
When the air ride kicks in both sides rise up.
Also I did not notice any bouncing.
I really think the mount is bad.
I will find out tomorrow when I go to fix it.
Will advise.
Thanks.

I changed the rear shock mount on the passenger side today and it took care of the clunking,
The metal pipe that goes through the rubber mount was sticking up about 3/4".
This is the second mount on the same side in less than a year.
It looks like either she hit a pot hole or went off the road and hit a rough shoulder.
The wheel on that side was scrapped up a little.
I asked her about it and she said she doesn't remember hitting anything.
No sense going any further with it.
After all these years I finally figured out just fix the problem and move on.
I do have extra shock mounts in my inventory for further incidents.
I am very lucky as my brother in law who has a hoist helped me fix it.

Thanks.

I suspect most of us are in the same boat; Forget the questions, since the answers are seldom satisfactory. Just fix it and forget it.

Definitely envy you for having access to a lift!

Yes I am very fortunate that he has a hoist.
He has a pole barn so there is plenty of room.
He bought the hoist about 3 years ago at a swap meet.
He paid $2200.00 and he has said countless times it is the best money that he has ever spent.
We have installed transmissions, exhaust systems, shocks, brake systems and various other parts.
The big advantage is that we can set the hoist at a perfect level and work off of chairs while sitting down.
It really is a back saver.
