Hi, when I put my dic on volts, is it reading battery voltage or alternator output?

I read somewhere here that its the alt. output, but when the car is off, does it only read the battery?
and what about when running? .......thanks

It is system voltage, as a whole.

When the car isn't running, it just sees the battery. When the car is running, the alternator bumps the system's voltage up, and that's what you get. So it's not reading voltage at a point, but rather of the entire system. If that makes sense.
