I had the tires rotated a couple weeks ago on the '05 Bonneville. While the wheels were off, I took the opportunity to inspect the pads. Looks like they probably have about 10K miles left on them. So, I've started looking so I know how much $$$.$$ to save so I can put on a nice set of brakes.

Here's what I've found so far. I'm open to "cost effective" solutions. I know that the term, "cost effective" is relative to your pocket book, so here it is:

Front & Rear Kit Power Stop K2556 $244.54
http://www.amazon.com/Power-Stop-K2556- ... Stop+K2556

EBC Front Kit S5KF1035 Shipping $26.00 $226.01 $252.01
http://www.amazon.com/EBC-Brakes-S5KF10 ... s=S5KF1035
EBC Rear Kit S5KR1159 Shipping $20.50 $190.23 $210.73
http://www.amazon.com/EBC-Brakes-S5KR11 ... s=S5KR1159
TOTAL $464.74

I'm open to suggestions and ideas. Thanks,. - BC

Check brakemotive on ebay, it was about $170 shipped for all four drilled and slotted rotors with ceramic pads for my SSEi, I have been very happy with them.

I just did my brakes on my 2002 sle, new pads and rotors all around, calipers and other hardware ok. I did not go with slotted or drilled rotors.

After much research, I went with Centric premium rotors and their posiquiet ceramic pads. While the rotors are not slotted, they are milled in a "cross-cut" pattern that gives them a better bite than standard rotors. The rotor hats are also painted black. The result was much better braking feel than the oe rotors and semi-metallic pads that were on the car when I bought it. There is no noise at all from these pads not, even any friction noise when wet. I got all the parts, front and rear, for just under $300.00. Ordered from JC Whitney, no shipping and they have been offering between 5% to 15% discounts on costs lately. They sell many different brands of brake parts.

Centric also makes slotted and drilled rotors. The prices you listed for slotted and drilled rotors and pads seem to be in the general price range that I looked at since last fall.

You may want to look into JC Whitney's on-line prices for parts, they have been very aggressive lately.

Good Luck,

Steven

Looks like seller brakemotive has no brake parts currently listed for sale for a 2005 SE Bonneville.

I found this on JCWhitney:

I have read the cross drilled and slotted rotors have a tendency to "whistle" as you're going down the freeway/highway. Just my luck, the car would "whistle" at a "bear" as I went by and I'd get pulled over. - BC

I made a mistake. My cost for the brake parts was $220.00, I had some other parts on that order.

These have been on my car since March, no noise or whistle. The cross cut design is not as deep as slotted rotors.

Heard that drilled rotors will whistle, but I think that depends on the design of the car, especially if an air dam blows air directly across the rotor for cooling.

These are about $200 more than I want to spend, but good doesn't come cheap, so I'll just have to save more. I'd go to 18" wheels, but the price of just the rubber and wheels makes that out of reach in the time frame I believe I have.

Power Stop K2556-37 1-Click Extreme Truck & Tow Brake Kit $329.91

Any more thoughts? Thanks - BC

Figure out the compound used in those truck/tow pads. They may be dusters.

Well, according to the manufacturer:

http://powerstop.com/search-results

Kits include brake hardware abutment clips on all applications
Stainless steel shims for quiet operation
Quiet, low-dust ceramic formula
20 percent more stopping power than other brands
Cross Drilled and Slotted Rotors

But then, how many times has a manufacturer made an inaccurate claim? Believe it or not, that is one of my main concerns too. - BC

I can't speak to their quality, but they are in the price you had in mind.

Yes, I saw them while doing my search. I didn't consider them because I couldn't find any consumer feed-back on them. If their quality is good, they would definitely deserve consideration. - BC

Everyone says that their pads are low dust producers. Try to find someone that has experience with the set up you really want. It seems to me that any drilled and/or slotted rotor system is going to produce more brake dust because these are designed to remove more pad material when brakes are applied.

Anyway, you are right to start looking and saving now. Since rotors cost more than pads, I would buy the best rotors you can afford that meet your needs. There are a lot of options out there!!!

Good Luck,

Steven

I have different brands of ceramic pads on all five of my vehicles and none of them dust. Most have drilled and slotted rotors. Carbon metallic pads dust the worst IMO.

That is my observation. I may be dreaming, but I'd hope I could get 100K miles out of the front pads, 150K or 200K out of the rear. I got 100K miles out of the front pads twice and 150K out of the read shoes once on the '92 Bonneville. - BC
