Cranks just fine, won't start. Fuel pump appears to be out -- I listen after putting key into "ON" position, and it shows no signs of life. I seem to recall that in the past I could hear it activate, pressurizing the system. Also, I removed the cap on the fuel rail and pressed on the pressure relief valve with a tiny screwdriver; no fuel came out.

So; I went to a salvage yard (counter type, not a U-pull) and got a pump from a 2000 SSEi. The guy at the counter said that there are two types of these, the only difference being one of the two electrical connectors on the top. In order to ensure that the one he gave me would fit, he threw in a fuel pump harness. Apparently the other ends of the harness are the same on both fuel pump types.

When I got home, I found that the new pump and old are indeed different.

What I would like to do is plug in my new pump and see if it activates, before going to all the trouble of removing the old one. I'm having difficulty figuring out where the other ends of the harness go. Any tips?

Ken

I guess I'll take the pump back to the salvage place and ask to swap for a direct-fit one.

Next question: I want to determine that the old pump is actually the problem. My current one does nothing when I turn the key to "ON." I'm thinking of leaving the old pump in place, disconnecting the two electrical leads and connecting them to the new pump, while it lays flat in the trunk, then having an assistant turn the key (for a second or two only) while I listen for any signs of activity from the new pump. If there is any noise from it, I'll swap out the pumps. Is this a realistic plan, or is there something I'm overlooking here?

You could for now test the current with a voltimeter with a helper. That way you know if the pump doesn't work cause it's shot or because it isnt getting power. Have you checked relays or fuses for the fuel pump?

Have not checked anything else yet -- I guess it wouldn't be hard to swap out the fuel pump fuse and see if that makes any difference, before doing anything else. I have a voltmeter, but don't know which pins to check to see if I'm getting power or not. I can research this, if nobody can tell me off the top of their head.

Thanks for the tips... Any other ideas? I'm all ears!

Ken

Do you have a manual? It would make it easier for you to determine which wires to check. I don't know off the top of my head but I'm sure many members here know, personally I haven't ever had to temper with my fuel pump

Swapped the fuse with the identical one next to it... and the car started right up!

Thanks for pointing out this rather obvious thing that I managed to overlook in my state of panic. That's why I love this forum!

I am SO GLAD I won't have to fight that locking ring off to get the fuel pump out.

P.S. Thanks Archon for posting the schematic. Although I didn't need it, I'm sure someone in the future will.
