Smoke is pouring out of my vents when my air is on. When I shut them off, it stops for the most part. I don't see anything else coming from the engine compartment. The smell is kinda sweet, like a burning maple syrup. What could it be? Need an answer ASAP!!!!

Probably mist, instead of smoke. Sounds like your heater core has gone bad.

I just went outside again, and tested to see what would happen if i turned the cold air on. When the cold air comes on, it stop to a minimal smoke out the vents. As soon as I crank it up to 90 degrees, it just pours out. Also, my front windows are all fogged up now.

Well. Everything I am reading online points to a shot heater core. The windows are fogged, steam comes out of the vents, coolant on floorboard, and it only happens when the heat is on... How much should this cost me?

Would you be able to do it yourself?

Not really sure on how it's done, but if it's fairly easy to do in just a standard garage with some tools. Then yeah I can.

I am not certain, but I do believe the removal of the dash is involved. Quite sure someone with more knowledge will chime in shortly.

Do not use an aftermarket heater core -I have seen and heard of too many going bad due to the quality & thickness of aluminum used by the aftermarket producers is too low quality and too thin.
I would highly recommend a NEW AC Delco 1560143. I believe they are $99.xx + S/H on RockAuto with the club discount, but I'm not sure about the Delphi HC20006 ($63.xx+ S/H), because I thought Delphi is/used to be a branch of GM/AC Delco.

Take those part #'s and search eBay, Amazon, Google Shopping and any of the other big name GM discounted parts retailer websites to find the best deal.

Yeah, I was told by the auto shop that he had too many cases with failed aftermarket heater cores, and suggested I get the GM one. It comes with a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty. I told the guy I would pick up all the parts myself (so then I know I'm not getting over charged with crap) and he said thats fine. I probably saved myself over 400 dollars on the parts by getting them myself. While he's replacing it, I'm also having him replace my valve cover gaskets and LIM. I bought the best of the best, and now I hope I should be set for at least another 100,000. 8-[ I am also getting both my belts replaced with Dayco belts. So my whole engine management should be in check after all of this. The only other thing that concerns me is the coupler in the S/C failing within the next 15,000.

Yes you are right with the dash being removed. Its a time consuming process, in which I have no patience for, lol. Plus, if *shoot* gets messed up they are liable to fix it. So that is why I am going that route. I'm not going to sweat it though, cause all my tax return money is going straight to the repairs.

Why are you worried about the S/C coupler going bad? Is it making noise? If not, don't sweat it. Mine was perfect at 185k, and I replaced it because I had to take the S/C apart anyways because I got a ported housing.

be sure and ground that heater core while you've got the dash torn apart. it might keep you from having to ever replace it again. - BC

I'm only worried because it seems like that is one of the things to go. I'm having the guy check it out and see if everything is fine. If not, I want to change it now while everything is tore apart. My biggest thing is that I want to make sure everything is working as best as it can, so I don't have to worry about parts failing while I'm gone farther away from home. When I get the car back, I will take video of my engine and you guys can tell me if any noises are not normal. I hear some sort of rattle, but I don't know if its a pully or my alternator.

As for grounding the heater core, what does that do? I am going to ask the mechanic if he did that then.

I'd take you up on that offer, but I needed the heater core right away. This car is my DD, and I already missed one day of work and school not having it. $45 is a lot better than $115, but the time difference for me is kinda worth it in a way. But thanks for the offer. I appreciate it.

As for grounding the heater core, what does that do? I am going to ask the mechanic if he did that then.

Should there be any stray voltage, it will reduce the chances of the heater core failing prematurely, - electrolysis. I think that was the reason the last one failed in my ole Bonneville. A radiator shop man told me to do it. - BC
