Yep, I've got that going on now.

It seems to be worse when it's warmer outside and after the car is hot. The shifts between 1-2 and 2-3 are so firm that the whole car jumps/lurches....almost like it has a very firm shift kit in it.

It doesn't do it all the time, but it's becoming more and more prevalent. Plus, at highway speeds it will occasionally slip.

If I come to a stop after this has occurred I can hear a whining noise coming from the engine compartment. The whining noise almost sounds like a power steering pump that's low on fluid (which I know it's not obviously), but it sounds just like that.

If I shut off the car and restart it, it goes back to shifting fine again for a 10 or 20 miles then starts acting up again.

How close to the end am I? I'd like to get another 5-6K out of this rig. She's at 227K on the original everything.

well if its slipping and banging into gear, i would be inclined to say it is going to fail soon.. 5K more is not likely.

Well, sounds like the typical PCS failure except for the slipping. MAYBE with a trans cooler and a shift kit you could eek out a bit more life.

I agree that it is likely the PCS. The whine is caused by maximum line pressure being applied. Get the shift kit, throws some Trans Tune in the transmission fluid and run that for a day or two before dropping the pan and installing the kit.

when my transmission was acting up, before I got it rebuilt about a month ago, it was banging around in gears, and was making a whining from the engine compartment. the more gas I gave it, the louder it got. when I took it in to a local general repair shop they thought it was the PCS. took it to the Trans shop and they were the ones suggesting the rebuild. and it sure needed it.
