Or should I stick with the Q-tip/rubbing alcohol method for cleaning?

Some cleaners are not safe for plastics, and others contain lubricants. I'd suggest either staying with the Q-tip and alcohol method, or buy some MAF cleaner at the parts store.

IDK, but I did use it on my 95 and a friend's Explorer with out any problem.
