Hi All

I left for class this morning I noticed my intake sounded a little different and my car was also running a little different too. Then I noticed in my DIC that it was sayin check gas cap. I pulled over and checked it. Seemed fine. Is there anything else I should check? Does this mean I have an evap leak some where?

Thanks,Keith

Yes, it means that it detected an evap leak. It would set the engine light until it fails the test again.

Check under the cap, and if it is rusty, clean it up and coat it with some silicone grease.

Check the lines going to the evap solenoid, the evap cannister, and the vent valve. Some have solved the problem by replacing the solenoid when no obvious problems were found.

I checked the solenoid it looks fine no broken or creaked hoses or wires. But i do have a strong gas smell. Smells like it coming from the front drivers door area. I also have a pending code P0440.

I dont know why I didnt think of this sooner. I installed my FWI from intense last friday. Would that have anything to do with this? After the install I disconnected the battery for a little bit so it would relearn with the intake on.

The FWI wouldn't cause the problem unless you knocked some hoses loose. You can't tell if the solenoid is working by looking at it. The only real way is replacement. Check the other lines I mentioned, too. P0440 is the gas cap code.

For the gas smell, check for leaking fuel lines. Also, pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and see if it smells like gas.

I replaced the solenoid and cleaned the crap out of the gasp and filler neck. I cleared the code just waiting for it to cycle to see if it come back. The gas smell is gone since then and hasnt come back.

Other than that you are making progress, not really more informative. You've gone from a large leak to a small leak.

These are the suggested things to check. Some, you've already done.

Quote:
The following conditions will set DTC P0442:

* Loose or malfunctioning fuel fill cap.
* Damaged EVAP purge or vapor pipes.
* Damaged EVAP fresh air vent hose.
* Malfunctioning EVAP vent valve.
* Damaged EVAP Canister.
* Leaking fuel tank, fuel sender assembly O-ring or pressure relief valve.
* Leaking fuel filler neck or seal.

Inspect for charcoal release from the EVAP canister.

I was just under my car a little while ago. Im pretty sure i was looking at the correct things> im guessing the the canister is the square box thats next to the fuel filter? If so it looks good no damage to the outside and the lines looked good. What i think is the vent valve that also looks good no out side damage and lines looked good as well (I followed the lines from the canister to find the vent valve) If i was was looking at the right things all looks good. But I had my fuel tank open to fix my gas gauge problem. but that was a month ago and about 1000 miles. Maybe the o ring didnt set right but i think that would have set a code sooner right? Is there a way to test the vent valve or is it a replace and see type of part?

Thanks for all the help so far :)

It sounds as if you found the canister, and the vent valve. You could take the car in and have a "smoke test" done to find the leak. However, it would likely cost less to replace parts.

Did you replace the seal on the tank, or reuse the old one? It's quite possible for it to hold for a while, and then start leaking later.

The vent valve would leak internally, so you would not be able to tell good or bad from a visual inspection unless it was severely damaged.

I did reuse the old seal for the tank. I have been wanting to get my car smoked for a while now. My friends cousin has a shop with one he's just been super booked. How hard is it to replace the vent valve?

Not very. The worst parts are: moving the clip that holds it so it can be slid off, and removing the vacuum hose. You may find it easier to remove the hose from the canister side, then take it off the valve.

I ordered a new fuel pump tank seal. So I'm hopin this will fix it. But will this problem make the car run a little rough too?

I'm still waiting to get the car smoke. But yesterday I decided to put a new gas cap just in case. I put the cap on around noon time yesterday and today on the way to class the check gas cap message came on again. Should I put my old one back on? Or does this point in a different direction? I asked if this would affect how the car runs because since this issuse started its been running rough. Also is there a way I can smoke the car at home?

Thanks, keith

I got the code it was still the P0442. But i had to replace my battery this week and the code was cleared but while I was replacing the battery I replace the fuel pump tank seal. I went Cape Cod over the weekend and that was over 200 hundred miles. So far so good. I hope I didnt jinx my self now ;)

Thanks for all the help :beerchug:

Hi again
I'm getting pretty tired of this check gas cap problem :evil:
On the way to class today my check gas cap light came back on I have drove about 500 miles since I replaced the tank seal. I pulled my gas cap off today and there was some gas on the inside of the cap and on theedge of the filler neck where the cap seals seems like there's gas coming back up or somin. Where should I go from here?
