I own a 2000 SSEi,Today on my way in the SES light came on flashing got off the gas and it went off, stayed off until I accelerated to pass some one. When i got to work i checked for codes nothing came up. I could hear a slight stumble in the exhaust. The Spark plus are new along with Napa wires all the ignition coils were replaced and all ran well,Until today any thoughts ??

What brand of plugs are you running, and what brand/age are the wires? Are you running premium fuel as required?

The wires are Belden Wires, Plugs are Autolite XP Iridium's less than a year old car loves premium nothing else. the last time it gave an issue like this it was a faulty spark plug that melted the electrode. Thats When I changed everything plugs, wires and coils

A flashing SES light indicates a catalyst damaging condition, generally a misfire. My car needs plugs every spring or it does the same thing. Pull all the plugs and look at them. There should be at least one code, generally P0300: Random Misfire.

Are you running any mods? Check for vacuum leaks, also. With the melted electrode, you may be running lean at times. When you pull the plugs, see if the same one is damaged.

Car has no mods. Factory. The reason for the melted electrod was that something arched and struck that one car had bad wires prior at the time of purchase

There is no need to clean the injectors. It happens automatically any time you fuel up.

I thought the SES light on when under load/acceleration meant a vacuum leak

Skippy, the flashing SES light indicates a catalyst damaging condition. Running lean due to a vac leak will damage the cat.

Why are you chasing vacuum leaks that will affect all 6 cylinders equally when you know it's related to #3? You should be looking at the #3 plug, wire, and coil post, as well as the fuel injector connector for tightness or corrosion.

Skippy, the flashing SES light is for a misfire. It's more commonly caused by plugs and wires than a vacuum leak, particularly when it's isolated to one individual cylinder.

Update:: Cylinder 3 Misfire was caused by the spark plug.. The bad news is something broke inside and knocked the ground of the plug into the electrode and now its knocking like a Whore house... Next step see about a rebuild car only has 149,000 and the body is in good shape. However thanks for all the help. i will post pictures of the plug later

Ouch, that sucks bud. Your best bet is probably going to be to find a good condition used engine. The 2005+ Grand Prix L32 is basically a direct fit, you'll just have to swap your current intake and S/C over. Rebuilding your current engine will be well over $1,000, you can find used engines for cheaper than that. Whatever route you do decide to take keep us updated.

You probably ran into a lean condition and chipped a piston. Willwren had this happen when someone pumped the wrong fuel.

Was this the same cylinder that had the bad plug the previous time?

Fuel used is premium what ever let loose bent the spark plus ground into the bottom Car is still running but for how long is the real question.. The original plug that melted the center of the plug was on Cylinder 4 middle back that was caused y a combo of a bad wire and ignition coil. kept the plug because i have never seen this before. the car is 12 yrs old and nothing has really been done except for routine maintenance. I am the second owner of the car and don't know much of its history.
