Hey guys,

As most of you know, I replaced my LIM gaskets, valve cover gaskets, new UIM with gaskets, and throttle body gaskets two weeks ago. This last weekend, I did a complete coolant flush and refilled with green "mixes with any" antifreeze.

Today when I start my car, i notice a large cloud of blue smoke (burning oil at start) coming from the exhaust for about 5 seconds. It clears out and I don't notice it while driving. I'm sure the problem has been apparent the last two weeks since replacing the LIM gaskets but with my remote start, I am generally not around the car when it starts to notice this.

So my question, is what did I mess up? The car always used oil, but never had blue smoke when starting. The UIM came with 12 small rubber O-ring gaskets, in which I didn't use since I couldnt locate where they went. I initially thought around the UIM bolts, but the old ones didn't have any so didn't think they needed to be used? Where do these O-ring washers go? I thought they may have been for a supercharged motor but not certain...

So please let me know what I did wrong. The car doesnt leave any oil drips so its leaking and burning internally and is represented by the blue smoke. I REALLY hope its just within the UIM and not taking everything all apart again. Please post your replies as I want to get this fixed ASAP!

Thanks guys!

The 12 o-rings are for the fuel injectors. You're supposed to change them when you do the UIM. Though that is not the cause of your blue smoke. I don't think the o-rings are a big deal as long as you don't have any fuel leakage from your injectors.

Yea, no fuel leakage at all, will keep them in case one start to leak. Think the instructions would have mentioned that...haha

Thanks for the reply!

Just curious how much oil does it burn in between oil changes?

How many miles are on the car?

The car has always had an oil consumption problem..I bought the car with 74000 miles on it, and would generally use just over a quart every 3000 miles...

I replaced the LIM and other parts/gaskets at 90,500 and ran some walmart oil for a week to flush any dirt from the system that may have gotten in when removing parts...since I was using my remote start, didnt notice the blue smoke (assuming it was) so not sure how much oil it burned in the 350 miles that week. This last weekend, along with flushing and refilling the coolant system, I drained the oil and put in Pennzoil 10W-30 Synthetic and have only driven 100 miles, so not sure what the oil consumption is on that..I just noticed the blue smoke today don't like it. And I'm certain it was created when I did the repair..just not sure what I may have done wrong...

I'm guessing you have some leaky valve seals. They leak onto the valves and then the oil gets burned right at start up.

There is very little you could've done while doing your LIM gaskets that would cause this.

I forget, what happens if the PCV is missing, bad, or missing its o-ring?

Ed brought that up as well Wikoff...and I honestly cant remember seeing an O-ring or installing one...I think I can check this tomorrow as well..is it simply just unhooking and pulling off the PCV?

Yes. There should be 2, IIRC. One on the MAP sensor and one on the silver valve itself.

At idle, remove the oil cap. Put your hand over the hole. Tell us what you feel. That's the easy way to check for a PCV issue.

Did a little investigating on the car today...

Opened the hood and checked the oil, was about a half court low which is odd..it was topped off Saturday morning when I refilled it, and that was about 150 miles ago...

Pulled the MAF off and that has an orange gasket on it which looks correct, then pulled the PCV and the O-Ring is installed and looks fine. Installed everything back and started the car.

It kinda sputtered a bit and blew out a large cloud of blue smoke...probably sputtered due to the oil to gas ratio being different..

While the car was idling, i tried taking off the oil cap and couldn't get it off, seems to be a huge suction created there..not sure if this is common or if the PCV is screwed up..

Any help is welcome..not sure where to go from here..

Thanks!

Replace the PCV valve, they're $3. Sounds like something is screwed up.

Take the oil cap off before starting the car, just to verify you know it comes off.

Well, interesting find and I think my problem is resolved...

Did some searching around on Autozones website today searching around for a PCV to purchase and swap to see if my problem is solved. While searching around, I ran across a PCV valve kit replacement that included the PCV, an O-Ring for the PCV and the larger one for the housing, the housing that holds the MAF, and a SPRING!!! When I took my old UIM apart and swapped the PCV, I know for a fact there was no spring under the housing. Which kinda pissed me off because during one of the times the car was at the dealer (while under warranty), they swapped the PCV to help my on-going oil consumption problem...(would think the DEALER would at least put it back together right?)...and me not taking that housing apart before, didn't realize a spring was supposed to be in there....

So I called around and found the kit at a local Advanced Auto Parts place for $18.13 with tax and ended up replacing all the O-rings and everything. Reassembled it and started with no smoke..although the car had only sat for a few minutes. Tomorrow morning will be the real test, so hopefully a combination of a bad PCV and a SPRING within the housing fixes my problem, as well as my existing oil consumption problem!!!! Keeping fingers crossed!

But thanks to everyone who has chimed in, sure makes problem solving less of a head ache!!!

I've just been viewing this thread off-and-on to see the mystery solved. Things are looking up though :) Can't wait to hear your results in the morning.
