Hi All

I just took a trip to New York and I got about 425 miles to the tank. Between buying the car a month ago and going to New York yesterday, my DIC read 14.3 MPG avg. When I pulled into the driveway after returning from NY it read 16.4. I remember reading a post that says the DIC tends to read high, so my readings worry me. During my trip to and from NY I drove about 20 miles in stop and go light traffic and the rest was highway miles. I'm posting this because I've been searching around the forum for what I should be getting for my MPG, and I just can't find a real answer- or I'm just looking in the wrong places. Is the 425 miles considered to be good mileage?
A little history-
The plugs, wires and pcv valve are about 2 weeks old (about 500 miles).
I am not too sure how old the o2 sensor and fuel filter are.
The air filter is a fram and is about a month old.

Thanks Keith

The best way is to take miles traveled divided by gallons used. DIC isnt acurate. Stop n go will kill your milage.

425 miles divided by 18 gallons....23.6 mpg. Id say you are right on.

Average for these cars is 18 in town, and about 28-30 on the highway.

All depends on how much you keep your foot outta the go pedal.

24 mpg combined on an SSEI is nothing to complain about.

If the front oxygen sensor is of unknown age, I'd replace it with a Delco sensor.

Sounds like you never reset the DIC, its just pulling from past data.

In my experience, the DIC is right on, in both fuel calculations: fuel used and avg mpg.

23.6 mpg I like that alot better then 14 or 16. I knew there was a formula for it but I couldn't remember it off hand. How do you reset the DIC? Is it just holding the reset button down? Because I reset my fuel used every fill up.

Yes, you go.to the appropriate menu and hold reset till it reads 0.

My DIC has never been 100% accurate, its generally a half gallon low on 14 gallons or so.

I seem to average right about 22mpg. My driving is about 80% highway miles.

DIC is usually in the ballpark, but there are times that it's off by a country mile.

Driving style has a huge part in your MPG. Starting very quickly, treating the gas pedal as an on/off switch, constantly changing speed, and going quickly will kill MPG's. I've gotten 39 mpg from my LeSabre once going 55 mph up I-95 from SC to PA, and being careful to conserve as much momentum as I could. Other times I've gotten 25 mpg highway by setting the cruise at 68 mph in a very hilly area and letting the car keep speed when a family emergency dictated I get somewhere quickly. Same car, just driven very differently.

So what one person reports for MPG might not match what you are seeing due to driving style and terrain.

I am put a lot of highway miles on my car, and I check my mileage at every fill up. I have found that the DIC is only 1 gallon short for gallons used, and the mileage is almost 1 mpg higher than doing the math at a fill up. I am surprised that it has been so close.

On long trips I always try to set a speed and just kept it there and try to stay out of boost as much as I can no on and off like a switch ;) I also think my DIC might be a little off as well But Im goin to reset the MPG today after work and see what it comes up with.

My DIC doesn't show fuel consumption, but does keep track of MPGs. I write milage, trip ODO, and AVG MPG on every gas receipt at every fillup, then reset the trip and the MPG. I analyzed a year of gas receipts and found the DIC to be consistently within .1 MPG of the actual calculations (taking significant figures into account, it's probably more accurate than my calculation based on trip ODO and fuel pumped to fill the tank). On interstate trips I get in the 25-28 range, and around town from 13-16 (pizza delivery . . . ).
