A mechanic poured a quart of synthetic trick shift into my trans and three days later the transmission started slipping. is it the oil he put in or does it new a new one? if it needs a new trans what year and car should i look for at the junk yards. my car is a 2001 pontiac bonneville sle with 170,000 miles on it

I would do a complete trans pan drop and replace the filter. Chance are, on a higher mileage car, that additives make the oil real slippery (kinda similar to synthetic oils) and worn parts will begin to slip. When was the last time the trans was flushed? If the trans was shifting just fine before, I would go this route first, would be much cheaper (~$70) compared to $1300...

My buddy put in synthetic trans fluid in his Grand Am and got the same results (car has 125,000 miles on it). Drained the fluid and put in regular, and trans has been fine the last 30,000 miles...

I wouldn't flush it, I would do a pan drop and filter, but start loosening your wallet. If you go JY route, I'd look for a low-mile Bonneville or Park Avenue that isn't supercharged. www.car-part.com will be a good place to start looking. Even if you have to have a transmission shipped from somewhere, it's gonna be cheaper than a re-man or a rebuild of your own. The only thing is you're now gambling with how well the replacement trans was cared for, even if it's low miles.

It's worth trying the cheap "fixes in a bottle" like Auto-RX and/or Seafoam Trans Tune first. I'd recommend the Auto-RX, as it made my transmission shift like butter in 1000 miles. Other members have had good luck with the Trans Tune.

Good luck!

Learn from the mistakes of others, that way when you mess up you can do so in new and interesting ways.
