I'm planning on heading out of town this weekend to my cousins place and possibly changing my front struts. the problem is this will be on Christmas day and nothing will be open for me to get an alignment afterwards, is it safe for me to drive the car about 2 1/2 hours after changing the struts without an alignment?

all depends on how close you can get it and if you value your tires. 2 1/2 hrs? is that like a 150 miles? I wrecked a set of potenza g009's in 60 miles. it's up to you.

Gotta mark where the strut mount bolts are positioned in the holes to even get it close. But I wouldnt risk it, unless you are gettin new tires.

well the tires are crap anyways I'm more concerned about damaging the new struts or other front end components

The only thing you will damage is your tires. Outline the old strut on the knuckle so you can get it as close as possible to proper alignment, and get it aligned ASAP afterwards.

The alignment from one side to the other won't change as long as you don't turn the tie rod ends. What might change is the camber, the "lean" of the tire with respect to the ground. You shouldn't be snowplowing (toe-in) or duckfooting (toe-out) down the road anyway.

But it could still pull one way or another, and will still ruin tires.

Well being that my camber is already wrong and my tires keep getting worn down on the inside I don't think I have much to lose

For what it's worth...I replaced the front wheel bearings on a '99 Saturn SL2 and didn't get it aligned afterward. 30k after and the tires aren't wearing unevenly, drives straight down the road. Mark the strut to knuckle position before you break it apart and I bet you'll be fine for your trip.

Are the wheel bearings on a Saturn like the ones on any other FWD car? Wheel bearings are a fixed part, wont change the alignment at all anyways.

Unless you have to pull the knuckle apart to get at them, which I doubt is necessary, but probably what he did.

 Wow, kinda snippy in here... Yes, it was completely necessary, the bearing gets pressed into the knuckle and the hub gets pressed into the bearing. There is a press kit that lets you do them on the car, but a mechanic only charged me $20 for the press work so it wasn't economically sensible to buy a $100 tool.

Outline the struts on the knuckle.

Mark the bolt heads before you do any turning. I learned that one of my bolts was an eccentric bolt. I think it was one without a washer. If I had marked it, we would have been closer on the setting.

If you do both of those, you'll be closer than you think. It will drive almost normal I'm told.
