hello all; new to the forum so i will start with i have a 2001 bonnie with 3.8 and approx. 110,000 miles. i am a fairly good mechanic, but lately i dont care much about wrenching, but will do my own instead of paying to have done. problem i have is at any engine temp. while in reverse the engine misfires, jerks, stumbles? it also does this when giving gas from a steady speed at any mph. range. i have read about a lot of problems with the MAF sensor. i dont know of any codes, i only have the chain auto part stores for getting codes. the last time wife had them check, she was told that there wasnt any, but these people usually couldnt look up a part even if u give them the part #. any and all ideas would be appreciated. also just read about the fix for fuel gage and oil pressure sensor that she is hounding me to fix.

When were the wires and plugs last changed?

What brand of plug and wires did you get? What else has been done to try and track it down so we don't recommend things already tried?

Start by checking the coils as shown in this techinfo article.

i bought autolite titanium plugs, and i think i bought napa plug wires, cant remember for sure on plug wires. i have changed ignition module, thanks to chain parts store not testing right, and have changed fuel regulator. all within last two years. problem seemed to get better about a year ago when i changed the ign. module but started messing up again not long after. module went out about a month ago put old one on, problem still exsists, part store gave me a new module, put it on and problem is still there.fuel filter has also been changed during this time, air idle control also changed.

OK...wanted to be sure that you didn't get Bosch plugs. They don't work well in our ignition system. Perhaps NAPA Belden wires? If so, we haven't had many reported problems with those. Besides checking the coils, check around the oxygen sensor to be sure that the plug wires aren't close to,, or touching that or the wiring.

A bad engine mount can cause what feels like a misfire. The front transmission mount is a weak point. Many have replaced it with a bolt or threaded rod, and hockey pucks.

ok, i finally had time to check things out today. checked resistance on coils. have the ac delco brand and had same readings on all. results- no resistance on primary
22 @ r x 1000 ohms on secondaries ........ all i have is an older needle indicator ohm meter.

check engine mounts - seemed to be in good shape

checked plug wires for contact on o2 sensor, had contact with one, moved for clearance.

have not driven car yet to see if plug wire was culprit; dont really think it was.
any other ideas would be appreciated.

My Saturn developed similar symptoms - any oxidation on the coil posts where the plug wires connect?
