I need to give my own car some attention for once, its got 173k on original parts. I wanna do new struts all around and then get an alignment. I have a $50 coupon at Advance that I would prefer to use (instead of RockAuto)

Front: Monroe Sensa-Trac Strut Part No. 71685 ($81.99 each)
Rear: Monroe Max-Air Part No. MA822 ($74.99 pair)

So what mounts are you guys getting?

Front: Moog Strut Mount Part No. K5337 ($92.99 each, OUCH!)
Rear: Moog Shock Mount Part No. K5341? ($26.99 each?)

Thats $478, way more than I was thinking!

Anything else I need?

Wow, you would still be cheaper with Rockauto. Any other reasons you would prefer Advance?

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I did not buy a mount kit for the rear shocks. I installed new shocks about a year ago and it rides great. Maybe I should have, but I notice 0 issues. However, I'm also interested in doing the front struts and will be watching this thread for info.

Inspect the rear mounts. If they're not clunking or torn, re-use them.

I agree to check the condition of the rear mounts. They're not that expensive, so you may want to replace them regardless. Pay close attention to the rubber around the metal sleeve. If it shows any indication of cracking, pulling away, or deterioration, replace them. I've tried various mounts, and the Moog have been the best.

You may not need the front mounts. Check their condition, also. You may want to add the strut bearing, and the upper spring insulator which has a tendency to wear through. I had to pull my struts again to replace the insulator. I found them at http://www.car-stuff.com/ for a decent price, and it came with the upper spring seat.

Before compressing the spring, pay close attention to how all of the parts line up, so you can put it together the same way. The upper spring seat is angled and has to be put in properly or everything will bind. As you remove the spring tension, when you put it back together, make sure that everything stays in alignment. The bearing likes to slip to the side, and the parts aren't held together, without the spring tension, as they were in previous years.

I'm getting clunking in the front, so I want new mounts, even if it is just to narrow it down. I'd rather do it right the first time, then do it all again. So if I want to do this right, its gonna be $478.

The only reason I need to use Advance is because I have a $50 coupon when I spend $100 that must be used by the end of the month. I might just buy $100 in parts from advance, and then the rest from RockAuto.

*edit*, If I get everything from RockAuto, its only $364 before the discount. Thats a major difference!

There's an online promotion for up to 20% at Advance right now. It may or may not work with your coupon, though. 20% of $478 is $95.60... You can do store pick up too.

Here are the totals:

RockAuto: $364 subtotal, $18 club discount, $40 shipping, $386 TOTAL

Advance: 2 seperate orders:
#1: $101 subtotal, $50 discount, FREE instore pickup, $51 TOTAL
    #2: $376 subtotal, $75 (20%) discount, FREE shipping, $301 TOTAL
$51 + 301 = $352 TOTAL

$34 difference... I probably do that...

I would check the tie-rods and ball joints out too.

Good plan, I'll probably do both of them. I want to replace my steering rack as well as my Magnasteer doesn't calibrate (stuck on Firm).

almost 180k, springs do wear too. Have you priced out the quick struts? You would get a complete unit which would save you time and hassle of swapping springs. Which isnt really that bad if you are comfortable doing so.

What RPO equivalent are the quick strut springs?

I have several sets of lower mileage springs, thats not a problem. I want to keep the FE2 feel also.

I did Moog swaybar bushings several years ago, but it might be time again.

I'd do tie-rods right now, as long as you're getting it aligned. It also gives you something to grease during oil changes, lol. Ball joints isn't a bad idea either, but the rivets are a PITA to get off. Just FYI.

If you are replacing the mounts, for $71.96 ea. you can get the OEM fr. strut mount at Direct (a much better choice IMO). The rubber on the OEM is much softer and pliable. I'm not sure on Moog, but the Monroe mount rubber is very hard, IMO cheaper material. However you won't get all the goodies you get with the Monroe mount kit 902972 (like the bearing plate, spring mount, new bolts and upper/lower thrust caps) you'll have to search and buy all these separarte at GMD, but I still prefer the OEM feel by far. I think Moog will be very similar to Monroe on this part.

Anyway, most likely the strut mount is ok unless it has dried or cracked. Rather you will need new upper and lower insulator rubbers (they dry rot and split from winter salt and force from the springs--the top one being the worst), and buy the bearing plate and spring mount. And get a good quality boot/bumper to keep the road off the strut rod (Monroe does have a good quality boot/bumper kit for about 15-$20ea). The very best choice is the OEM with the lower thrust cap, boot and bumper all molded as one--about $45ea at GMD.

The coils will still likely have enough tension-- esp. on your car they had firmer springs stock. I only replace springs if they are rusted and rotting. If the powder coat is intact I would leave them. They are not too expensive if you want to change them though. I have an extra set of lightly used, firm aftermarket springs I got from RockAuto, if you pay shipping you can have them. They are painted though, so they will rust from the road elements unless you powder coat them. I also have a set of Deville superfirm OEM powdercoated coils which were used on some Bonnevilles. Either will fit, the Deville springs are very firm and like new.

As far as assembling-- look at the strut ass'y when you get one out-- there is an alignment notch on direct center back of the upper plastic spring mount, which is direct center back of the strut. And the bottom insulator rubber, which sets only one way, has another alignment notch for the lower pigtail end of the spring. Everything else falls into place from there.
