Went to town today, started out fine. About two hours into running around, I stopped, got out of the car and noticed a loud whining/buzzing noise. It's from the fuel pump and we've never had an issue before with it being loud. You can hear it in the car.

It quiets down to a whisper but you can still hear it when you push the loud pedal. Also quiets down when swerving side to side with cruise on, so the throttle is being held steady.

Tank is full of gas.
Have vacuum at FPR.

Have not checked fuel filter or pressure yet. Going to do some checking within the next day or so.

Thinking pump might be on it's way out, but not sure. Any advice?

My advice is to put a new pump and filter into the budget as soon as it dies. Once they start making noise...they tend to die soon after. I remember hearing mine make noise about 20 mins before it died on me on the freeway in the middle of the night. Have roadside assistance?

Is there any possibility it could be a heat issue? It cooled off and driving it around tonight it made no noise at all.

Have you checked the fluid level in the pump? The high pressure line can start to leak, and that could lower the fluid level, causing the noise.

If its gonna fail, it doesn't matter what noise it makes..or none at all...just make sure you're ready to have it replaced/replace it. Mine didn't really make all that much noise when/before it failed, it simply started making bumping and stuttering sounds inside the tank...and I know of someone who recently had their's fail in an 00 SSEi at 108k...

Fuel filter been changed recently?

OK...I'm more with it now. Yeah...I had PS pump on my mind with the whine. I'm sending myself to my room. On a similar thought, though...is it louder the lower the fuel level?

That was the weird thing.... It had a over 3/4 tank at the time. We have driven it probably 100 miles or so since then and have had no noise at all

Is it possible that it could have been the leveling compressor, instead? Either adding, or releasing pressure? It would be most noticeable from the passenger side wheel well area. Some make some pretty strange noises, in particular when releasing the air.

No, not at all. This was definitely the fuel pump. I am wondering if the heat allowed something inside the pump / sending unit to expand and get loose? Even with all that gas in the tank, when the gas would slosh around the noise would get quiet and loud again, but the pump was completely submerged.... That is why I am thinking the heat / loose issue. Maybe the sloshing gas was enough to move something around and stop the vibration? Normal driving wouldn't do it, but swerving, almost like doing a slalom would make it loud and quiet, as would being stopped, tap the throttle, than hit the brakes again so the gas would get thrown around.


I don't know, I am pretty lost on this one, but all seems fine for now. We will see what happens during the next really hot day, and I will budget in a new pump as well.
