working on pulling the trans out of the bonne and when i disconnected the cooler lines no fluid came out :bluetwitch:

so i took the "blowy" air compressor attachment and blew through one line and pointed the other in a drain pan. nothing came out for a few seconds, then it started to slowly seep out. it came out faster and faster as i blew longer and longer. The fluid that came out was absolutely disgusting! It was a grey color :angry7:

Is their an easy way i can flush this myself?

You could run a degreaser and water mix through it several times and then rinse it really well. The problem is that you already know there is a restriction. Do you really want to risk the rebuild to a plugged cooler that will damage the new tranny?

This cooler fit rather well on the drivers side just in front of the radiator and I was able to bold it to the sub frame.

The dealer has a machine to clean it out. This is a short section that tells a bit on how it works.

Quote:
The J 45096 transmission oil cooling system flush and flow test tool replaces current tool J 35944-A. J 45096 is a self-contained unit utilizing a 12-volt flow meter, shop air supply and DEXRON(R) VI automatic transmission fluid (ATF). In the flush mode, transmission fluid is cycled through the transmission oil cooling system. High-pressure air is automatically injected into the fluid stream adding agitation to the ATF oil to enhance the removal of contaminated ATF oil and debris. In the flow mode, an electronic flow meter is used to measure the flow capability of the ATF oil cooling system. A digital display indicates the ATF oil flow rate in gallons per minute (GPM) along with the amount of ATF oil in the supply vessel, supply vessel ATF oil temperature, machine cycles and the operating mode.

And more importantly...
Quote:
Notice
Insufficient oil flow through the ATF oil cooling system will cause premature transmission failure. The required minimum ATF oil flow rate reading is directly related to the supply oil temperature. Refer to the flow rate reference chart for the oil flow rate specification based on the temperature of the ATF in the supply vessel.

I'd bet their work wouldn't be cheap, so may as well be safe with either a replacement radiator, or the external cooler.

Here is the one I used :http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=2&Product_Code=4589&Category_Code=tru-cool-hd&Product_Count=1

It is the one Bill Buttermore referenced. It came with everything needed except extra tubing. I needed a second piece of the same length due to mounting it on the driver's side. Napa carries the line for transmission coolers. You could also get a smaller one if you need to, it is a tight fit.

Since I have not had a failure, I ran mine in series with the stock cooler. The highest my temp has gotten was 164* so far.

B&M Transmission SuperCoolers are the exact same re-boxed stacked plate cooler, they're even branded the same, and come with the same accessories. They're near identical prices in most cases, but every so often, you can find the B&Ms from online retailers much cheaper, and sometimes with free shipping.

That cooler that Matt linked above, is the one that I put on the Avalanche...and it keeps that overworked 4L60E at max 190 in traffic even with a load. Perfect for any 4T6xE.

I used the B&M one, 70264 (B&M Site, Summit $60, JEGS $60, Amazon $60+FS All cheaper than the LONG boxed one.)

I agree with the B&M coolers, personally I use a 70268 in tandem with the stock cooler on my Buick, and I have never seen the trans temps rise above 160-170 degrees, ever. And 4T60Es are known for running hotter than your 65.

How about taking out the radiator and letting a radiator shop clean both the coolant and the transmission fluid portions.

High risk here. Cleaning it out well doesn't solve the problem.

How did it become clogged in the first place? My trans shop is very adamant about bypassing the stock 'cooler' in the radiator after any kind of trans failure. The passages are very small and quickly clog up.
