I'm not sure what the deal is. About 8 months ago, I started having a grinding sound on my left front rotor when going in reverse. Then, suddenly, it just started full-time grinding while I was out and about. I drove it straight to the mechanic. $1300 later, he told me the whole wheel assembly almost fell completely off.

WTF?? Why?! No idea. Just had to basically replace the whole left front end.

So, here we are 8 months later, and she's grinding when trying to reverse again. Now, there's no way that I can get under there and look anymore, with my health the way it is. So, I'm going to just take it to a trusted mechanic and get done what I've been trying to get done: new suspension, new tires, and new upper strut bearings.

I know that my upper strut bearing has been needing replaced for quite some time. My first question is this: If the upper strut bearing completely disintegrated and is broke, can it cause this condition?

Not sure if the sound would be from the shock mount, is it a constant grinding noise or intermittent?

Constant. Almost sounds as if something is getting jammed between the rotor and something else when I put 'er in reverse and move back about 10ft.

Well, I'm taking my car into the shop in the morning to have them look it over. I'll update as soon as I get back from Kansas City on Sunday night. You all take care until then!

Since you're only 8 months out from your original repair, any chance all those parts are still under some warranty or guarantee from the shop? I agree about getting a second opinion from someone else, but you might as well get some stuff fixed for free first if you can.

Ok, so I lied. As I was leaving to take the car to the mechanic, I let the car go in reverse without "covering" the brake pedal: no grind. So, it was grinding only in reverse, only with the brake pedal applied. That cleared up quite a bit as far as narrowing it down. Also, take into consideration that, usually, the rear brakes are what slow the car down in reverse, and you get what the issue was:

Rear brake caliper, which trashed the rotor. I suspect it fell out of adjustment somehow (probably when I changed them last  )

So, I got her back today: new struts all around, new tires all around, new front upper strut bearings (wow, those puppies are expensive!! ), new battery (also more expensive than I realized), rear brake job, new rear rotors. Total bill: $1,647. But she rides like a dream!!

The thing I love about my new Sens-a-tracs: lifetime warranty.

Next, I need to turn my attention to the engine to figure out why she's leaking so much oil all of a sudden. Probably need to replace the valve cover gasket. May as well replace some *ahem* parts under that cover while I'm at it... Image

Yeah, it is a big bill, but it was a big list, too. :P Considering the list, it really was a good price (I hafta keep telling myself that LOL ). I'm just relieved that it wasn't my front end acting up again.
