Just got back from Michigan early Saturday morning. 2,404.6 miles round trip. The car performed beautifully the whole way except for an EGR code, which was just due to a dirty connection. Probably unrelated but possibly worth noting that this started happening after I replaced the plugs and plug wires Monday afternoon. There is no misfire, so I doubt this has anything to do with it.

Tuesday on the way to work I thought I had felt the trans slipping a little. But didn't think to much of it. On the way home in the afternoon it seems the trans was slipping a ton. I'll try to explain it; It's slipping a little bit but doing it frequently, almost as if I was pumping the gas pedal. I pulled it out of OD into 3rd, same thing. Pulled it into second and I could still feel it but not as much. Pulling into first got rid of the feeling however that doesn't solve anything.

It hasn't been as pronounced as it was Tuesday afternoon. Temperature doesn't effect it much, though it seems slightly worse once the car is warmed up. It's very prominent in OD going uphill at a low speed.

Trans fluid still looks good BTW, still has a red/pink tint to it. It has yet to be changed, though I meant to do that sooner. I was waiting to be able to install the shift kit at the same time to save me from buying even more fluid.

I'm just unsure how to pinpoint the problem. Internal trans issue? Torque converter? Input/Output shaft? Differential?
Any specific symptoms or signs to look for to help me diagnose this?

1fatcat had a similar problem after replacing his pressure control solenoid. I don't know if this will help you or not.

Thanks for that link. I was thinking that that PCS would be it. Because the problem seems to be intermittent and the severity of the issue changes as well. So I thought maybe the valve is sticking. I picked up some Seafoam Trans Tune and put half the can in there this afternoon. Gonna change the fluid and filter tomorrow after some more driving around in the morning.

However I might have been wrong before. Now I think this feels more like the engine is stumbling. I came to a stop in my neighborhood and as I touched the gas pedal I got the same 'slipping' feeling I though I had before. Very light throttle and it seems to hesitate to move. So now I moved back to a possible ignition problem. Gonna go exchange my plug wires tomorrow and pull the plugs and double check the gap. 0.055" right? Then I can eliminate issue that right quick. It's not misfiring just hesitant and stumbling. I've never felt a slip before so I assumed that's what I was feeling, still might be though.

Anyway my plan tomorrow is still going to change the trans fluid. Gonna pick up some fuel injector cleaner and swap my wires (Napa Beldin 7mm w/ Lifetime warranty) as well, see if it helps out. And check the plug gaps again (plugs are Autolite 605's).

Standard is .060 If you're running a smaller pulley, then .055 would be right.

That's what I thought, I'm running the 3.4 currently.

Well changed the trans fluid. It was fairly clean, but it was on the dark side. Just some metal sludge, which I'm told is normal.

I first changed just the plug wires and I checked the gap on the plugs. They were at 0.055" where I set them except one was a little high. I also routed the wires differently and kept them from touching each other or anything else. Started the car and it was missing almost immediately. So I thought maybe it's the plugs. I still have the old plugs, and we know they didn't have a problem before. Plus dad thought the gap should be whatever factory is. So the original plugs went back in at 0.060". The issue is still there. The possibility of two sets of wires being bad is pretty low, but possible I guess. I'm gonna check the grounds today, but after that I don't know where I should start looking.

The missing is random across all 6 cylinders. And it only has trouble when trying to maintain a speed or coasting. I can't feel it when the car is coasting but I was watching the aeroforce and it's picking up misfires when coasting too. The aerforce seems to reset every 2 or 3 seconds and reads misfires again.

My EGR code came back last night after driving around P0404. Simply cleaning the connection didn't help this time as it did in the past. Can the EGR cause a missing problem?

make sure you did the firing order right will,

have you tested the coils?

did you use dielectric grease?

Check the connections at the ICM. If they're bad it could cause random misfires.

I know the firing order is right, made sure of that as I routed the wires, then double checked. Plus if I had mis-routed them it would be a constant misfire, this comes and goes randomly.

I didn't use any dielectric grease no, I could try that I guess. I have yet to test the coils, how would I go about checking them? I'll look into checking the grounds and connections.

The EGR can cause a misfire at idle speeds, but generally would not be very noticeable at cruising speeds. You can try cleaning the pintle and see if that helps. That's sort of hit or miss, however.

Normally, I'd expect only one or two cylinders showing a misfire if it was a coil problem. It wouldn't hurt to check them, though. Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

when you take to coils off to test them i would bring your ICM into a parts store and have that tested as well. mine went out and caused my 00 ssei to random misfire on all cylinders, then i put in a new one and it was good as new :)

I am fairly certain the problem is solved, or at least the cause is known.

Finally cleaned out the EGR yesterday. Went driving around for about 20 miles it no misfiring. Except as I pulled out of the driveway is misfired 64 times in one cycle on just cylinder #3. Which is totally different from how it acted before. the most I had seen before was 4 misfires in a cycle of the gauge. So if this happens again I'm certain I'll be replacing the EGR.

Thanks for the help everyone.

It came back yesterday pretty bad, missing almost constantly when trying to maintain a lower speed like 25-55mph, seems to be better with higher speeds. :???:
This also came with the P0404 (EGR Circuit Range/Performance) code once again.

Looking to replace the EGR most likely.

If you buy a used one, ask for a guarantee in writing. I bought one used that "worked when I removed it" and it was just as bad as the one I pulled from my car. Since I didn't have it in writing, I ate the $35 on it. I'll not make that mistake again.
