The last couple days when I go to start the car, it starts to crank but either slows down or stops cranking, and when i try again it starts. Any ideas?

Have you already ruled out the battery and battery cables? Given similar symptoms, I usually will put the charger on to see if the battery is down, indicating some problem there. Since the starter draws so much current, I ensure my battery cables are (both) clean and making a solid connection. Any resistance in connection will hinder strong current flow to the starter. After that, you should be able to get your battery checked out at the local parts store.

If the battery is charged good and the cables are good and the problem persists, I would look into a possible problem with the starter (dragging).

Sounds like mine just before it refused to engage at all. By all means try more juice in the battery and check for corrosion, but I suspect you'll be under there replacing the starter soon.

I had the same problem too. Figured it was the battery until one day the starter took a *shoot*, only time my 98 has left me stranded so far. Luckily they arent hard to change

I had the battery tested today. Its still good. I cleaned the cables when I did the UIM and they are still clean. So I think I'm going to get a starter tomorrow and put it on. Where is the starter anyways?

On the front side of the engine (behind the radiator). You will need to remove the big plastic splash shield and work from below. 10mm bolts hold a couple of plastic covers in place around the flywheel. Twist the front one to get it out. Disconnect the battery, then the small electrical wire to the solenoid, then the big battery cable, then the two big 15mm bolts that go in vertically that hold the starter in place.

For me, a 12" socket extension made it easier to get at the starter bolts...
