To get the vats number for your key you set ohm meter to 20k right and touch one prong to either side of the key.

2.35 would be Vats #8?

Or you could go to your friendly GM dealer with your VIN and he can tell you.

Yeah but then he'd try to sell me the key and in the end i'd wind up paying $150 for something that I could get on ebay for $12

I also need to buy a remote.

i thought the same thing with the outrageous price, but they're not really that bad. I had one done for my 97 and it was only 25 bucks and they even cut it. But, call different dealers if one gives you a high price tho. Cuz I called one close to me and he quoted me the $25. but on my way home from work I just stopped at a buick dealer, and they wanted almost $50.

Ok, here are the Pass-Key resistance values in ohms.

Order of the table is Pellet Code, Nominal Resistance (It's not an exact value, it's a range with about 5% either side of the nominal value being acceptable.)

1, 402
2, 523
3, 681
4, 887
5, 1130
6, 1470
7, 1870
8, 2370
9, 3010
10, 3740
11, 4750
12, 6040
13, 7500
14, 9530
15, 11800

So, you're key is well under the 5% error on the Code 8 nominal resistance (2370 ohms)
