Year and Trim: no longer a Bonneville owner
Last few days car would barely crank over, according to the scanner the alternator is putting out 13.5 volts (same as it's done since I've owned it). I suspected the battery since it looks like it's getting old, so I bought a new one. I installed it at the store and car started, barely.

After I got the car home and shut it off, I tried to restart it but no luck, it won't turn over, I can here it trying, but it won't go.

Battery cables inspected, no corrosion.

Grounds removed, cleaned and reinstalled. No joy.

Scanner says battery has 11.7 volts. I've got the battery charger on there right now to see if that will make a difference.

How difficult is it to remove the starter? I'm guessing that's my next best bet.

What starters will fit? Buick? any 3800?

Sounds like the starter to me.

It was easy to change the 94 starter with the engine out. Only two bolts.
Disconn. Battery.
Disconn. starter wires.
Undo the motor side bolt first, then the other one and drop straight down.

I brought the starter to an electrical shop and they rebuilt it for $100. complete with new solenoid.

Had to do the same with the Trans Am starter. Sure works good after the rebuild.

Thanks Paul. Now that my truck is back in the yard I'll try to jump start the car and see if that will help any. If that don't work, I guess I'll have to jack it up and get dirty.

Starter is out, not an easy job.

What is that plastic piece doing there covering the bolts anyway? Couldn't remove it so I had to chip a piece out from around the bolts so I could get a wrench on them.

The plastic piece should just pull off if it's the one i'm thinking about.

[-X .....did you forget about your Service Manual?

I had to take that plastic cover off to access the TC flywheel bolts. Ya, I broke it too, but not on purpose.

Took the starter to the local "starter and alternator" rebuild place. He bench tested it and pronounced it officially dead.

He had an overhauld starter on the shelf for $80 plus tax. 2 year warranty.

Now to go out and get dirty again before it starts to rain.

It's in and working.

Just putting tools away and it started to rain. :booty:

Wife reminded me of how lucky I was. She wanted me to stop and get some groceries on the way home, but I forgot. I could have been stuck in town without any tools.

Worse yet, it could have waited until next weekend and crapped out in Seattle. :beerchug:
