so when i got out of school today and tried to start my car, i got nothing. the lights were coming on, but no clicking, no starter barely turning over, nothing. at first i thought the batteries were dead, but i noticed the security light was flashing. I turned the wheel back and forth a bit, thinking maybe the steering lock was messing something up, put my foot on the brake and it started... now the car never starts on the first turn of the key, but always perfectly on the 2nd (or sometimes 3rd) and the security light flashes. I can't remember if it always flashed this many times (after all the other lights are done).. any suggestsions?

It does sound like the passkey to me. On my 1993 LeSabre every now and again it doesn't start and the security light will glow. I pull the key out and wait for about 2 minutes (exact wait time is in the manual) and then the light goes off and away it goes. Sometimes a quick scrub of the key with something like nail polish remover will help; I cleaned mine after the first few times it happened and it was fine for months.

Worse case scenario you're gonna need to bypass the VATS system on your car, which is fairly easy to do. I did it in a bar parking lot on another members car with a few packs of resistors and wire strippers. Once that is bypassed, the security part that has to do with the keys will no longer be functional.

hmm. i was under the impression my '95 didnt have the chip. (well, it's on the key... but we have a little gadget at work that you put your key into, and it lights up if there is data on the chip. mine never set the lgiht off) someone told me that this was only on OBD-II

In any case, the + battery cable was pretty loose.. i tightened it up, and it started a few times in a row. I'm hoping that was it..

They aren't data chips, they're resistor pellets. When you put your key in the ignition, the key cylinder reads the resistance of the pellet in the key, and then sends it to the VATS, if it's the correct resistance, the car will start. If not, the ignition will turn on, but you can't crank the car over.

So what happens? how would the resistance change? or is the fault with the system, not the key?

Just like anything else....the resistors can just up and stop working...The key cylinder where the pellet is read could have worn out.....The VATS box may not be reading the resistance every time....I never had to bypass my old 95 with 220K on it...but I did have to start using the 2nd key because my main key quit on me.
