Cracked and leaking? No. The coolant will just expand, exit via the rad cap, flow to the overflow and leak. Once cooled down, the coolant will contract and you'll get air in the system from having less coolant.

Do I need the car running when opening the bleeding valve?

Yes, and it needs to get up to full temperature so the thermostat opens and that trapped air is expelled.

I may be wrong, but I think you want to open the bleed valve before you get the engine up to operating temp.

Makes sense to me but I would open it 2x in that case. Once to have the water pump push the air out on top of the thermostat, shut it once that air is expelled, then open it again at full temp to ensure any air that was under the thermostat gets out.

Coolant funnel burping kits are a nice to have too. You can go to town squeezing the rad and heater core hoses to work the air out into the funnel without spilling anything.
