New to the page here. I'm sure this topic has come up before, but here goes. I have a 1992 SE that the engine is done. Can I use anything else but a L27 L code long block or are there any other options. I can find series II engines all day but the Series I are a bit harder to come by.

Thanks

If I remember right, 92 was a one year only upper aluminum intake manifold and no EGR setup. You should be able to use the block and heads from any 92-95 L27 though. (95 L27 being in Regals, vans, or whatever didn't get the L36 that year)

Maybe you can just plug the EGR stuff and go on the 93-95s? Anything air/fuel related that's different I would swap over though. Injectors/MAF/Etc.

My 92 had EGR.
I always thought it was a mid-year change.
Didn't some 92's also have Magnavox ignition?

Yes, some 92's did come with Magnavox ignition systems.

As mentioned, you will need to keep it L27. If you pull the engine from a later 93-95 with EGR, you'll likely need to swap the manifolds over, which you may as well do LIM gaskets anyway at that point.

You can also get a donor car, and do a drivetrain swap, but that is a much bigger project than changing engines out.

Not to question your credentials or anything, but why do you say the engine is done? What is the story on that, and also the service history of the car?

I know this is an older post but I'm going to throw this out here...

91-92 L27 was 8.5 : 1 compression and 93-95 L27 was 9.0 : 1 compression..

You could use the 91-92 heads on the 93-95 block... 95 units used the series 2 crank and had a one year only balancer as well.
